Sounds like it may be a relay problem.

Check/replace the headlight relay. This relay does several things, including switching on the headlights, signalling the raising of the headlight motor and switching the interior illumination to 'night' setting.

It may also be the headlight switch itself.

On my car, there is a plug connection way up on the firewall and above the brake/clutch pedal. The plug connection came loose and I had no instrument lights. You have to stand on your head to find theconnection, but it's up there. Tighten the electrical plug and I had lights again.

Question

Anyone know?

Was this problem resolved using the connection in upper firewall area suggestion?

My 78 also refuses to keep the instument illuminated for more than 10 seconds aftre start up. Fuse is OK, as is dimmer. Drove home this evening with a Maglite- again!

You all and your nice cars.... I just spent two more hours out in the garage troubleshooting my electrical gremlins (won't crank, much less start). The more I touch the car, the fewer things work. Agh! Last time I lost the blower motor. Tonight the lights quit, but at least they still pop up. Funny, when you turn them on, the fuel pump cycles. I'm convinced the car is possessed. All I succeeded in was drinking some Yuegling.

I know this doens't help your issue, but I needed to vent.

IIRC the instrument lights are connected to the X post of the ignition switch and should stay lit whenever the ignition is in the on or run position. If they are going off, the culprit is either the adjuster (potentiometer on left side of steering column) or the electric part of the ignition switch.

Rule to remember - anytime that the electrical system of an automotive vehicle starts doing weird things, check the grounds...
