You're not likely going to be able to "change" an 85 mph speedometer to a higher reading one, unless you work on these professionally. This is an electronic speedometer on this car.
I certainly understand your unhappiness with this situation; I recommend you buy a new instrument cluster from the "Big Three". 928 International probably has used ones on the cheap.
Where are you at? I found a wrecked 928 in Toledo, Ohio once, and pulled its cluster. Then later, I found TWO 928's in a junkyard in Orlando...one with an un-cracked pod! Check your local junkyards.
-If I were you, I'd put your location underneath your icon, and you should put the year and transmission type in your signature, so that we can give you correct advice if you have a problem.

Any good VDO repair center can recalibrate your speedo and reface it with a 170-180 face. Some even make a 220 mph face setting the odometer reading is easy ...too easy ! Speaking of easy we sell recalibrated tested with new odometer gear speedometers for $195 exchange so you can swap yours in just a few hours.

That just don't make any sense at all unless the car can only go 85. What were they smoking?

Pod removal is not difficult at all. And...as far as 'tampering' - when I replaced my odo gear a while back - it is obvious that it is EASILY tampered with!
A few hints to make pod removal easier...
1 - DO remove the steering wheel
2 - DO pull the stalks
(Neither 1 or 2 is NECESSARY - but makes it SOOOO much easier!)
3 - Put the front of the car on ramps! The 'nose up' angle makes it MUCH more comfortable and easier to work under the dash, laying on your back with your head in the floorboard!
First time you R&R the pod - it's about an hour out and an hour back in...after that, 15 minutes each way EASILY!

The speedo counts pulses from the sending unit...translates these to speed in the speedo head unit. If you get a complete speedo unit, it should be a plug and play replacement...after you get the instrument cluster dissassembled.
As Mark notes, the pod removal is simple...once you have seen it done. Hard to describe, but there are plenty of descriptions in the archives. I have had my cluster dissassembled the replace the odo gear and fix the shift indiactor lights. I too have a 300+kph speedo to swap for my fereralized 85mph unit one of these days.
Take JimB up on his suggestion and pickup one of their recalibrated unit and then the job is just a disassembly/reassembly job...should take you about an hour or so. I'l also plan to rehab a few other things while you're in there...bulbs, recal the voltmeter, clen the electrical contacts, etc.

Paul -
Dan and I (maybe redufo and Rich) are working on my track Car Saturday - C'mon down and give us a hand. (Exotic MotorWerks)
Im buying pizza and beers.
Start time 900am
Regarding the Speedo - Talk to Dan as well. He inherited my Old 84S2 - and as far as I am aware of. Hes stripping her down for the parts. Of course the engine (Parts of) is going in HIS track car. The speedo reads around 91K.
