I don’t know how serious this is or maybe just a hoax, but I think I see a couple of familiar points. Upto 250HP with the turbo. That would be an interesting drive with only 600kg. If you want to be seen in it of course.

They're planning to bring it to Europe and America. Approval should be ready in autumn 2006. Should cost around 14.000 USD. A bigger version would be available too. They plan to give the Smart some competition.

I don't think the original SMART could be DOT crash certified either, though. At least that was one of the reasons I'd heard explaining that the car would not be coming to the USA.

Top Gear slammed a SMART head on into a concrete barrier at 70mph. Both passengers would have lived.
The sad truth about the SMART car not being sold in the US has more to do with marketing and our love for SUV's. Its a damn shame, if the price were right, I would consider buying one.

I've seen one Smart here in Tucson, on Broadway Blvd heading eastbound into town. I was in my Saturn, so catching it took a minute. I didn't see for sure, but I'm betting it had Sonoran (MEX) plates. I can't imagine those cars being on our sreets or highways.
On the other hand, the Yugo, LeCar, and various other miniaturized European cars have made it here. I'd hate to see how the people's car (the Old bug) handles a DOT rating these days. Don't forget the Honda CVCC, the Rabbit, and any number of Fiat Spyders and MGs.
In fact, if you think about it, the DOT seems to let a lot of things on the road that aren't particularly safe. Maybe that one I saw was a scout for the invasion! Maybe the 828 is coming too...with 250Hp and about 1300 lbs (plus driver with bologna sandwich) it should give those other supertuned minicars a run for their money. It had better come with a roll cage though! I'd hate to see what American iron could do to that sardine can.

The previous models of this Brazilian mini car had the tail lights of the early 928, but the front was more boxy looking.
The SMART is available in the US.

Also, check the page that explains the SMART's safety systems: http://www.zapworld.com/cars/safetydetails.asp
Official SMART website for USA: www.usa.smart.com
Another one from ZAP on the SMART only: http://www.smartcar-usa.com

It even has a shark fin...cool.
I've often considered placing a shark fin on top of my car. I heard it helps the aerodynamic stabilization of the vehicle at high speeds...just like the fin on a surfboard.
