Default Stongard / 3m Clear Bras [Ended up using Venture Film]

Can these be applied over new paint, or do you have to wait 30 days or however long for the paint to cure?

It looks like the one that goes on the spoiler/bumper cover would be easier to install with the part off the car.

Anyone had this done in San Diego? I don't trust myself to do it as well as I would hope a professional would.

Stonegard would be right person to answer that question. As for installing,
Stonegard recommends a professional installer.

Wait for it to cure. That's what the installer told me to do if I ever have the Boxster re-painted and put a new clear bra on it.

Btw, the 3M product is a heavier weight and better protection than the StonGard.

Yeah, I've broken my fog light lens twice from common road debris despite Stonegard.

My guy inquired about the StoneGard. He was told that they use the 3M film. There are many companies useing the 3M film under different names. Each company has a different design to their kits.

The newer 3M film is thiner than the previous product. From what I have been told 3M is coming out with a newer verison of the film later this year that will stretch better with less orange peel effect and should work better on the 928 than previous versions.

I would wait until the new 3M film comes out before applying.

Wander over to the 997 Forum here on Rennlist and read some posts from the Premier Mobile guys. They have a great reputation. I'll bet if you PM'd them, they'd have all the answers you need.

I sent the Premier Mobile guys an email today. Looks like that's the way to go. I think they're doing a swing through SD in a month or two, so it should dovetail perfectly with the paint curing. It's my daily driver, but after the car gets painted, I don't think I'll drive it until I can get this done. I'm excited about not having any rock chips or noticible touch up marks.

Well my Stongard bumper and mirror cover are still on order, I talked to a local installer and he could not find a template kit within the company for a 928, he could make me a custom but he said it would be cheaper to do the stongard and he was happy to install it.

Reason is similar to yours Brian, to protect my new paint job a little, I did a track day a few weeks after and picked up a couple of chips, another 1K mile road trip picked up a few more ... figured i'd like to protect the car a little and I didn't want to drive with a black bra covering everything.

Let us know how you get on.

Here's the email I rec'd from Sam, with a link to the film kit. I've asked whether he could do a custom job that covers more (maybe all) of the hood, since I've got some chips that are higher up:

Brian,
As far as the material goes, we are currently using Venture, which has been tested by Nissan to be twice as strong. The film does not have a clearcoat, which is a plus for those who dislike swirls. To install the kit for your 928, the cost is $645 installed and will cover the headlamp, signals, fogs, front bumper, hood, and fenders. Diagram of the kit can be viewed here: http://www.xpel.com/products/configu...&submodel=1548
Installation Time - 2.5hrs

If you are located in Southern California our next trip out would be September 14th-18th. If you'd like, I could place you on our list. Thanks.

Best,
Sam

I currently have the Xpel kit in the Venture product on the 928. I can't stand it. It is easier to apply than the 3M for the 928 application as it stretches better and the kit when cut in 3M film needs to be stretched too much to work properly. IMO the Xpel kit is poorly designed for the 928. Their other kits have been right on.

The Venture product does not have a clear coat which requires you to wax it more often and has a sticky feeling to it if not waxed regularly. The film leaves a hazy appearance on darker colors which makes it much more noticeable than the 3M film. It works fine on the bumper and the kit actually fits better than the 3M for this application. You will not notice the haze on the bumper because it is too down low to be an issue. However on the hood and around the lights it is too noticeable for me to accept. I would not cover the entire hood. The kit goes pretty high up and will take care of 85% of all stone chips.

I actually had several people ask what was wrong with the paint then I explained that it was the film. they felt it looked like crap.

I am in the process of figuring out what can be done. I will eventually remove and replace the Venture film. For now I am leaving it on until I can try the newer 3M film which may be sooner than I was told.

I will let you know as more transpires.

Ugh. Thanks for the comments. The whole point of this exercise is to have an end-result that is as worry, maintenance, and labor-free as possible. More research required, I guess. Thanks for the offer to keep me/us up to date on your progress.

Haziness in Venture is a qc problem with the manufacturer. If this haziness is seen, it shouldn't have been applied and should've been sent back for warranty. We've had rolls like this and we just send it back for replacement. No ppf is perfect and there are limitations to all products. Here are some pros / cons for 3M / Venture

-3m: clear coated is used for film protection and to create the glossy look that is on our paint today. The clearcoat swirls and scratches up fairly easily. Although their current film has been updated over a yr ago, the film is due for a replacement already. This 2nd gen film still exhibits orange peel texture, but not quite as much as its 1st film.
Venture - Clearer than 3m on all colors. Does not have any type of coating over film. The film, like 3m, still needs to be maintained by washing and waxing. Neglect of any ppf will degrade it....to what degree cannot be said because there are too many variables affecting this.

Default Premier Mobile Clear Bra

So I had Premier Mobile custom create a clear bra for my car using Venture film. Took them around five hours to do it at a cost of 850. The results were amazing. I highly recommend these guys.

Preparing the surface

It's stretchy

Cutting to size

Can't even see it!

Even from the side, the line is very disceet.

Cool! So I assume this thing stays on until you're ready to take it off (for what ever reason). But once, you take it off, is it off forever? Just curious.
