Default I think I need a fan clutch

I pulled the fan assembly out of my 84 to clean and refill with silicone fluid. I got the thing cleaned up and what do I find on the back of the pully where the nut is suppsoed to be? A big glob of welded metal. I am guessing that somewhere along the line the end of the threaded shaft snapped off or was stripped beyond use. I am guessing it was broken off as the welded area only stands about 1/4 in off the back of the pully, so I know there is no nut under the weld. The front of the fan clutch looks like new after cleaning. Should I try to refill and install it as is or should I source another clutch and install it. I have not tried to grind off the weld yet so I am not sure if the pully will be usable once I get it apart. My digital camera doesn't do close up pics to well but I think you can see what I mean. Anyone got a used fan clutch they can part with?

PERFECT time to replace it with an electric! You MIGHT gain a couple of ponies but you WILL gain lots of room in the front of the engine bay!

Good question.... you could run a belt straight to the air pump, I think. Anyway, unless you're sure that your viscous unit is bad... be sure you don't store it flat... or the fluid will leak out and it WILL be bad regardless...

You don't need the air pump.

If you have cats, you need the air pump. Otherwise, Weissach is right.
