Mid mufflers or what ever you want to call them
In pic 1 is the mid muffler whatever's on my car but I have only seen the ones in pic 2 on all S4's I've seen. The ones on my car are huge and are definitely Porsche parts. Can someone fill me in if these are SP OP or certain cars or what?

resonators...............standard equipment. Various cars had various sized ones. The ones on the GT are tiny in comparison....that is why I need my cats, with an RMB, my cats ARE the mufflers..

AFAIK...the big ones were for 87 and part of 88...porsche switched mid 88 to the smaller resonators....The small ones ran up till the GTS..where they got big again.....
The small ones are just open cans and much lighter than the bigger ones....add a RMB to the smaller mids..and the sound is sweet....replace the cats with an x crossover..and you have nascar....but putting bigger mids in the system..makes it just right again...

Joe, as the others have said ...
The ones on your car are standard early S4 resonators, as were on my '88 - heavy too ...
The ones on your garage floor are the GT type - very light, and they play sweeter music.
I've done the switch around exactly like Tom & Gretch: reinstalled the cat, added GT resonators and a RMB. The sound is more stimulating ... than before. I've stored the large resonators for whenever I get around to finishing a X-pipe project.

If not for the sound..then for the weight savings...go for the switch..you'll love the sound.....(but need the RMB too)..

For anyone interested - Earl G and I have a set of the small "GT" type intermediate mufflers/resonators from the '88 we parted out in June. Fit '87's to replace the heavy/quieter large resonators. These are in excellent condition, car had 63K miles on it. Contact me directly IF INTERESTED. e-mail is: kittyandgary@verizon.net

Brian,
The setup you describe actually sounds pretty good around town and on the freeway.....when you floor it though..it will be nascar .
The X pipe makes a huge difference. When I Had my 87 AT...I put the rmb on it..but was disappointed that it didn't sound as nice as another locals GT..with the RMB..didn't figure this out till I saw the two styles of mid resonators while visiting Louie Ott. I got one of Louie's X crossovers on the 87..and the sound was simply amazing...Of course..I figured I should take it to the next level and add the smaller mid resonators...well....it ended up being too loud around town....sets up a resonance at around 2.5 to 3 k...right where I usually cruised...tough to take.
Now with my GT..I figured I wouldn't put the X on it...but another local lister was running the X into the stock rear mid and rear muffler..and it sounded really good too...so that is where I am now...stock rear muffler and mids...with the X... I will eventually go to the fulll Louie 2.5 inch back system...as I think there are some HP gains to be had..
In summary...the Cats do a lot of noise dampning....I haven't heard one of the X crossover/cat setups yet...so that may help if you want the stock gt mids and rmb..with an x...
