Default DFW Mechanics?

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a good 928 mechanic, besides Zimm's, in the DFW area? Preferrably closer to ft. worth? I have no problem with Zimms, but wanted more options.

Thanks

You, or me, or Jim + Roger, or all of us. Seriously, if you don't want Zims, it's DIY time. There's a shop out on west side, on hyw 80, just past loop 820 west. I stopped in there for a quote on the TB/WP job, and it was $14-1700. they had no 928s in the shop, but the guy seemed to know about them. YMMV. Bring it to Roger's during the next lunch-n-learn, we'll make hash of it.

What do you want done?

Thanks Doc..I have an 87 s4 that's been down a year. I was driving at 70mph and it just died and wouldn't restart. i spent a couple of months trying to track the problem myself..timing, relays, etc...it'll turn over but won't fire. i took it to german auto works on the jacksboro hwy about 4 weeks ago. They told me the LH brain was fried. Since this MY is notorious for bad brains, i thought they may be right. they said the original brain wasn't sending signals to the injectors. I got a rebuilt brain from 928 intl because the shop wanted to charge me 1700.00 for a rebuilt one. Anyway, got the new brain and the shop said it was bad as well. Sent both the old and new brains back to 928 intl and they tested both and siad both are good. Told the shop today and now they're "guessing" it's probably the EZK, but the EZK doesn't tend to go bad like the LH. I've come to realize they haven't a clue. I just want someone who knows these cars to find out why it won't start.
I think i know of the shop you're talking about. i may stop by tomorrow and talk to them..otherwise it's tow it to ZIMMS.

I have nothing against Zim's either, but I prefer Mayo Performance (talk to Tom). Really nice guys and they don't talk down to you. I don't really need that. They have all the manuals and CD's and are very good. They don't work on a lot of 928's, but they will research, then fix it.
Good Luck

There is a very good 928 shop in Lewsiville called 5th gear. Talk to Rick Jordan at (972) 317-4005. I have known and dealt with him for 20 years and have nothing but good things to say about him.

I can echo what Mark just said. Rick is about a mile from where I live. Can be slow but good.

As my friends have said let us sort it out for you - you will learn and aslo have fun. Apart from parts it will cost you a couple of beers.
I may have the use of a "Hammer" to diagnose the problem.
Let me or my friends know.

Regards from very hot New Mexico (I know on vacation again)

I love doing diagnosis on the fly. So, driving along, minding your own business, and the car dies cold. No sputter, no surge, no poopity-poop-poop - then dies. Just dies cold, right?

This sounds like electrical. If it were related to the fuel delivery you typically have some surging, or sputter then dies. Lost electric is just bye-bye. So, possible EZK, possible relay, fuse, etc. Seriously, we'll hack at it, no charge except for a case O brewskis or so. I do NOT recommend the shop on W hwy 80. I thin they will work on it, but for diagnosis, the 'boys' will do a better job for less money. where are you? if you're around Ft Worth, we might be able to visit you and make some small progress.

The other shop was just guessing based on some hearsay. They may have got it right, had a 1-50 chance, right? Diagnose first. Then start replacing. If you just throw parts at it, it's bad form, and usually a waste of time.

soontobered84...unfortunately yes, i did take it to bobby archer's. Mayo performance? i'll check em out. I may just end up having it towed back to my house and try to isolate the problem again. I'm in Glen Rose, TX...not exactly in the midst of things.
Doc...yeah, it just died cold. All things considered..yes, electrical seems to be the direction to look.
Mark..thanks for the advice. I'll also contact rick jordan if i decide to just get the car fixed and bypass the DIY route.
I'll keep you posted.

Do you have experience with this place? They sure have a lot of viper's in the place, but that doesn't help with porsche's. They told me they had experience with 928's, but I shoulda pulled the plug when I had to provide them with the wiring diagrams!!

Change LH relay, EZK relay and fuel pump relay.

Check that the rev counter moves when you crank the engine. If not, suspect EZK relay, EZK brain or flywheel speed sensor.

Thanks John! I'm starting to think I should get the car back and do this myself. I'll keep you posted.
