Yes, it cranks. I replaced the battery before taking it to the shop, but when cranking, it seems a bit weak. I'll go out and put the charger back on. I'll make sure I have a strong battery saturday....thanks

Rich,

This is almost the scenario I'm in right now. The 1st shop jacked around with the relays and went so far as to unscrew the panel from the firewall. I didn't know this until the 2nd shop told me the panel was just sitting in there loose. The 2nd shop, at least this is what they said, tested all the relays and didn't find anything. That doesn't mean they put them back right. I'll check all this as well as time permits.

Thanks for your insight. I just HOPE I have bad relays!!

Do you guys have/need an oscilloscope for troubleshooting?

I've got a fluke handheld scope to loan in case you need it.

If you are looking for tach/crank signals it may help.

Let me know.

Scott, I don't even know how to use the voltage meter I bought last year for troubleshooting my sunroof motor! Maybe someone who's coming saturday can chime in. I can pick it up if someone wants to borrow it.

Thanks

docmirror will be bringing all of the necessary diagnostic equipment and the knowhow for electrics.

185318,
Whatcher name? Can I call you 18 fer short?
Have you checked to see whether you have spark?

Scott,
That should read DIRECTLY proportional.

My name is Jon. Sorry for the number, but I'ts an old employee number and I've gotten used to it on the web.
I haven't checked for spark since I got the car back, but I will tomorrow. I'll get as much done as far as doing any preliminary checks so at least I can report on saturday what I've found. I know we'll probably have to do all the checks again, but at least we won't be going in with zero info.

Thanks

I'll bring a list of relays, their part numbers and positions I printed from the 928sp site.
My SWAG is the crank position sensor.

Ernest ... here is some info from my website that will help you test the inductive RPM "crank position" sensor.

http://www.electronikrepair.com/wst_page6.html

b. Testing the engine RPM sensor. The EZK spark control is the system master, if engine rotation signals are not provided to the EZK, spark will not be generated and the EZK will not provide a turn-on signal to the LH Jetronic fuel injection system. (Note: if your engine has spark, this test and the EZK output stage tests are not necessary).

The first test to perform is a resistance test. It is best to start the measurements at the spark control module connector, since the test verifies the complete circuit. You will need to fabricate a test lead to with a blade to plug into the connector. The resistance reading should be between 600 - 1600 Ohms at EZK connector pins 23 (+) and 6 (-). If the test does not yield the desired results, disconnect the engine speed sensor plug to the wiring harness and test at that point.

There are plenty of hints and diagrams ...

Thanks Rich, a print out of the page will be there.
BTW,
I'll also be bringing a spare MAF. I can't imagine that a MAF failure would cause a sudden shut down, but it'll be there.

Thanks Ernest, I've yet to be able to do much testing beforehand, but I'll see what I can do.

Thanks all. I bet we'll be able to at least isolate the problem(s) in a couple of hours by at least eliminating what works.

Thanks again!

Jon

Don't worry about testing beforehand. Just make sure of the shade, fans, and lotsa iced tea.

He'll just put milk in it-- nutty sod. BTW a can o gas would be a nice thing. We don't know how old the stuff in the tank is. Who has a fuel pressure setup? Might as well have that too. Man, this poor bas**** is gonna owe us

I have the fuel pressure thingy - the two brains (does not include mine).
Jon get yourself a new can of gas just in case what you have is old.
I will bring a fuel filter as well.
Anything else you can think of?
