Thumbs up Newbie found a 928 for sale

Looking at a '79 928 5sp.
Red/Pasha, 110,000 miles, very clean.

It's a good price, seem to be in very good condition.

The interior needs love, but the owner says he knows where to get that material. Anyone here have a source and/or price?

Drives out great, custom exhaust and $1,000s in maintenance in the last 5 years, including belts, etc. Shifter could use new bushings, but it's not bad.

Owner's manual and CD-ROM come with it.

What do you guys think of it, what should I look for when we go though it, and what do you think it's worth?

THANKS!

It depends what you want to do with it.

It looks like a good candidate to keep it as a classic.

Original. unmolested, clean...

But if you are one of those with speed demons in their veins,
you might want to look for a newer model with more power.

Because one of the problems with owners of the older cars,
is that in their need for speed, they end up magling really
nice original 928s. So if you plan on keeping it stock,
and restoring the interior, then this is a great car.

If you want to race around, or hot-rod the car, maybe it's
better to find a less-clean s4...

This one would get restored. When I was ready for more, I'd trade up.

Any idea what she's worth?
I see rats on eBay all day long for ~$5K, but this one seems much nicer.

Too many variables to say how much it's worth from a few pictures. If you're really serious about pinning down a price get a PPI.
But otherwise, in round numbers, a pre-S4 928 in great condition is worth approx $10k. So subtract from $10k what it'd take to get the car into great condition and there you have it. Say:
$1000 for interior work
$1000 for misc. mechanical work (brakes, etc.)
$500 for paint problems (knicks, scratches)
$500 for a new set of tires
etc, etc, etc

But when was the timing belt done?
Have the AL ball joints been replaced?
Does it come with all the service records?
etc, etc, etc

Brakes are all new, joints are all new, belts are 1-2 years old, paint is not bad, interior needs retrimmed to be perfect.
It comes with some records, I'll find out exactly how far back in about an hour, when I take it to my mechanic.

THANKS, keep 'em comming!

I'd say it's worth around $5K.

I see 79 5 speeds going for $3500 to $4500 all the time but none have been as clean as that one. I have always wanted to puke when I saw one of those checkered interiors but again, I have never seen one this clean. I think it looks great on this car and the red sets it off nicely. i do see a rip in the drivers seat but its probably cheaper to fix those cloth seats than what it is to fix the leather. If you plan on refurbishing or restoring this car, please remember that you will likely never get anything close to what you have in it when you sell it. Its just a fact of life with these cars. They are not investments . At least not in dollars. They are an investment in fun, and thats gotta' be worth something. Good luck if you buy it. It looks to be a very clean example of an early 928. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Got a few more pics, but the owner went with me, so I didn't take it to the park for a couple good shots, like I was thinking of doing.

He said "928 Specialties" had the interior fabric, so I'm going to call them tomorrow.

Now, here's a question for you guys...This is a biggie...

The stick is a bit "sloppy", I'm thinking just bushings, and he says he may have a set to go with the car.
However, it also "shudders" a but when you release the clutch going back into a shorter gear. ie: going into 3rd from 4th. There's also a "squeal" under the hood when under load.
It may need a clutch job, he said the shudder could be the clutch and the squeal could be the throw-out bearing, but I was wondering if torque-tube bearings could do this as well...

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, we're really considering buying this car.

Thanks!

if the current owner is the one who cut the door panels to install those gaudy speakers you outta smack him... same for the rear interior quarter panels from what I can see
the drivers seat needs a complete recover, the op-art material is not readily available to my knowledge, crack in dash
otherwise a nice early example
I'd say $3-4000 depending on the clutch situation... it is a nonsunroof car and I'm taking this into account

Does the A/C work ? The manual control head in the dash is like $700 as I recall. The clutch issue can easily be several hundreds of dollars. The shift linkage parts are about $150.

a/c inop, supposedly due to o-rings in the hoses, or something.

The holes were already there, he just filled them, there are no holes in the rear, they're seperate boxes.

Any thoughts on the squeal and shudder?

...Losing faith in this one...

a good PPI by a 928 knowledgeable mechanic should find the problem/s and help you in your decision

Have you done restorations before? It can be very frustating. Have a plan, get a PPI. Restoration, versus rebuild. I had the good fortune of having a restoration project before my 928. What I learned is have a drivable car without major mechanical issues. Its cheaper to pay for it up front than get a deal and pay for it later, especially if this is your only project. This is not not the only deal out there, if it feels right go for it. But get the PPI. Best of Luck, and use this forum its a great resource. Ed M
