Ok. I muddled at got the thing out.
No bloody knuckles, but I highly recommend taping up the metal edges around the work area to prevent wrist scratches.
Thanks.

My server had a couple of hard drive failures, and I'm in the process of getting a
new server. I've temporarily place the site on my desktop server. The door handle
link is: http://sis24.berkeley.edu/928/wk-door-handle.html
The temp site home page is at:
http://sis24.berkeley.edu/928/
This is from a back up made in Nov 2003. The data on the hard drive that failed was
recovered, and when the new server comes up, I'll restore the whole site (over 3 gigs
of photos and video).

Thanks,
I just read through it. These things break in exactly the same spot don't they? I don't see why a reinforcement couldn't be made to strengthen the part. On the other hand 19.5 years between door handle breakages is something I can probably live with!
The "junk" in the '86 looks a bit different. 2 Allens and 2 screws with locknuts hold the actuator on. That adds a solid 15 minutes roundtrip on the project without a doubt.

'They' record your name, writ large in the WSM,
intone the names of you & your car, oommmm,
toss some incense on the candles in the shrine.
The smoke rises to your (higher power) HP, and
He forgives you of all those nasty things you
said during the door handle procedure.
G'luck. (now, think of the other door!)

I finished the job!
I am not sure that I qualify as a wrencher though. It took me over 2.5 hours to get everything put back together (disassembly was done a few days earlier in only a matter of HOURS). Reassembly including such antics as:
Drop screw inside door, put key in ignition, roll up window, reach down and get the dropped screw, roll down the window, remove key from ignition, drop washer inside door, put key in ignition, roll up window, reach down and get the dropped washer, roll down the window, remove key from ignition, drop nut inside door, put key in ignition, roll up window, reach down and get the dropped nut, roll down the window, remove key from ignition.
Repeat this about 10 times and you have an idea of how I spent the better part of my evening.
Finishing touches on the doorpanel reassembly... test... lock no workey.
Two things:
1) If you over tighten the round lock **** it jams up the system. OK, eased up on that.
2) The small, middle door panel section puts extra tension on the interior door handle's cable creating overtension to the point that the lock will not be able to engage/disengage. Wierd but true.
OK, I resolved 1 & 2 by making adjustments; thank heavens that I didn't have to unbutton everything to do it! Kinda surprising how "finish" items can mess up mechanichals.
Done.
