If you increase your engine's capabilities you may be looking at wheelspin city.

There are no known available 928-compatible wide phonedials, hence, wheel upgrades to something else.

In the event that you like drifting, perhaps the narrow phonedials are the ticket?

"There are no known available 928-compatible wide phonedials, hence, wheel upgrades to something else."

I have 245/45/16s all the way round on mine. They work fine.

Yes, i know ideally i should have 8" rims for that size, but they deliver what i consider to be acceptable cornering now(remember i'm a GM guy at heart, lol).

I had 16x8 3pc BBSesque rims on it, but i love the look of phone dials, so i was willing to make the sacrifice in cornering potential and to deal with the couple hundred rpm loss in launch speed(which i just overcame by lowering my rear tire pressure at the track).

Eventually i plan to get them widened to 8", but that's way down the road.

245 should be OK.

As someone else had mentioned, there is an 8" 944 phonedial out there that will probably fit early model 928s.

Jim has mentioned the common understanding that for S4 brakes introduced in 1986.5 and forward, phone dials do not fit. There was a red 1986.5 at SITM that had phonedials. They fit.... BARELY. 1/8" clearance from the brakes. THEY FIT!!!!

At what point does 8" rears become insufficient?

I have 8" rears for my S and I only get insane wheelspin on cold days.

All of the forced induction 928s have found 8" insufficient.

So what is the word?

IMHO, phonedials are a very nice retro look but they just don't seem wide enough for today's power.

Ok, I guess phone dials are out if it's going to be that difficult or frustrating if I get them and they won't fit.

If I go with something else in a 17", what width should I go with to give me better traction on the wet pavement? I currently have the 16"x8" dish wheels and I slide a good bit around wet corners.

Hey John,

I'm new here, but I might be able to help you. I took a complete set of phone dials off of my '79 5 speed 928 last December. They are the 16", and they have 4 newer tires mounted to them(very little wear). The wheels are a little ruff looking, and missing the center caps, but they are straight. You can have all 4, if you'll cover the shipping costs.
Let me know.

"At what point does 8" rears become insufficient?"

I know that when i switched from 8" wide to 7" wide i lost about 200rpm of useful launch speed tops(which i was able to get back and then some by simply reducing my rear tire air pressure).

I reckon that a step up from 8" to 9" would produce comparable results, ie, gain you another couple hundred rpm of launch speed.

Going from 7" to 9" i could probably launch hard at 2000rpm vs the 1600 i launch at now.

John..."I slide a good bit around wet corners." That would perhaps be throttle over steer induced by too much application of the right foot ! Wider tires will not help with wet traction and actually will hydroplane much easier in standing water.

Yes, I do have a little bit of leadus footitus. I'm slowly getting used to the power in the shark, but I forget and go zipping around a corner and let loose sometimes. I'll stick to the 8's for now then.

You might try 16" Clubsports. They were on the 89GT. 16x8 up front, 16x9 out back. The later model 944 turbos had used them too. Jay Kempf has them on his 79 and he has the larger S4 calipers up front. Scott may correct me if im wrong, but IIRC, Jay is running the 16x9 CS on all 4 corners. Considering how Jay was beating up on me, i might go this route myself.

i've got a set of 7x16 52.3 and 8x16 52.3 in my garage from my former 944 turbo. if anyone is interested i'd trade two of them for two 7x16 with 65mm offset.

Can't you just use a 7mm or 8mm spacer with the phone dials to make them fit with plenty of clearance?

I have spacers on mine. Mine is an 83, and when i mounted them they were recessed way deep in the wheelwheel.

I got a set of nice hubcentric spacers off ebay for like 80 bucks or something.

If my offset is what you need jyroon, i'll trade ya.

I'd just as soon loose the spacers to free up the extra unsprung weight.
