I discovered that I have a funky head gasket situation so driving my car was not in the cards. I made a flying trip (140 miles) up on my motorcycle and arrived just after lunch. I was surprised to have people introducing themselves to me, knowing who I am, yet having never met me. That was great. Because I wasn't able to stay for the dinner/presentation/raffle I instead bought some extra tickets and am crossing my fingers. Come on, service manual! I was just in time for a presentation by Charles Ott regarding exhaust crossovers, H vs. X shaped, etc. Nicole went out of her way to see that I got fed even after the catering staff had taken virtually everything away. I didn't thank her enough for that.
It was really nice to put a face to the names of some fellow Rennlisters, more specifically 928 folks. I had a conversation with Bill Ball regarding Honda CBX's (he was wearing a club jacket, my brother rides one). All the while I wasn't realizing that he's the open road racer extraordinaire(until I get home and jog my memory) otherwise I'd have had a lot more questions of him. There was a very well produced slide presentation by_________ (it escapes me) about the rear mounted turbo and working through the prototype stage with the goal of a consumer friendly kit. A working example was due to arrive this evening or early tomorrow for perusal by what I think is a very discerning clutch of enthusiasts. I would be out of my depth to make a judgement about the system, but it looks a bit convoluted to me.
I didn't count exactly, but I'd guess that 16 cars were there, lined up in front of the oh so photogenic (and busy) Timberline Lodge. I counted at least six wedding/receptions going on today in the myriad gathering rooms around the rambling grounds. Having never been up there before (perhaps shameful for a native Oregonian) it hadn't occurred to me how active a place it actually is. The summit was clouded in and it was quite brisk indeed, which didn't help me warm up after what had been a cold ride up to 6000+feet from my 200 feet above sea level stomping grounds. But I'm rambling now, tired. It was great, a good ride. It was much warmer as I went back down into the afternoon sun. Pleasant even. Got home just after dark. And no rain, which when I left this morning was looking iffy indeed. I had a great time, too bad I had to cut it short.

WOW!!! Thurston you must have been FLYING back on 5North to get home so quick. I guess you and Adam B and Tom Middleton took no prisoners on the trek back home (well that could also be easily understood with Tom's that Rear Turbo Car aching to spooling up some more...that was an impressive machine I must say so myself).

Shark in the Hood...AMAZING

A total of 22 988's showed up with our distance award going to Dan Bise from Pasedena, California and what a wonderful display Timberline let us put on in front of the with 928's spread across the front entrance for all to see (even the ambulance and fire truck that arrived to med-evac an ill guest at the lodge). I think the medical professionals paid more attention to the 928 than the ill patient!

Hotel guests admired the show of 928's and took pictures of and with the cars all day Saturday. and during Sunday (Today) beautifully cooperative weather and a wide opened paring lot made for pictureseque snappys with Mount hood as a backdrop.

I will have a detailed overview of the entire event posted within a day or two but I wanted to first Thank our sponsors who because of their generousity made this entire event possible:

***928 Owners Club***
***Sunset Porsche***
***A&P Specialites***

We really enjoyed it, even though we got little to no sleep both nights. It was a great pleasure to see so many friends again. Dan Bise made it all the way from Pasadena; Nicole and Bill from the San Francisco Bay. I missed some close friends who could not make it to the event ... next time! The lodge is spectacular ... I've never seen so much old growth and such thick beams. That place is more like a real castle. The views were world-class. Imagine having brunch with the breakfast table against an 8 x 20 window looking down from halfway up a mountain, over a massive mountain range. The food was so good and plentiful, I was disappointed when I discovered I couldn't handle more than 2 full plates. I must be getting old. The turbo presentation by John Thomas was very well-done, and he was subjected to some very educated in-depth questions from the crowd. Tom Middleton is the perfect candidate for prototyping something like this, with an '89 GT and his flair for fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants pioneering. Very interesting setup indeed, with a turbine exhaust and a blowoff tailpipe of different sizes at the rear. And that WHHHHHHHHHIIIINE!!!! I think Tom had a hard time leaving my 85 in the dust on the way to Louie's though . It was also very cool to have the expertise of Louie Ott in his very in-depth session on 928 breathing. I got to see the Dave Lomas/Garrity X and I'm impressed.

I loved it and I'm ready to do it again.

No, he drove, I led Uneventful trip from Spokane except for Adam needing gas where none was available. When we finally pulled into a Chevron he took on 21.02 gallons.

Got back home about 12:30AM with no tickets thanks to the Valentine One and the CHP largely taking the night off. Big thanks to Nicole for sacrificing her car to the 1400 mile cause so mine could get a rest.

BIG KUDOS to Pat Edwards for making this idea into wonderful reality. But BIGGER KUDOS to Heather, his wife. Pat should freely admit she did most of the work. She was everywere making sure things went smoothly, and smoothly it did. I know how much work it is to negotiate the meal contracts, for one thing, and the fact that we had open bar at two meals was remarkable. And there were no rubber chickens at this event. Heather ran everything else as well, giving Pat time to fraternize and study all the hardware. THANKS HEATHER.

As Heinrich said, the Timberline Lodge was spectacular. The whole event was spectacular. The lodge, the mountainside location, the vast countryside of sweeping vistas and twisty roads, the small towns full of little gems like the shop full of 356s in Mosier, the best tech sessions, the most rewarding raffles so that many of us came home loaded with new goodies, the particularly friendly 928 Northwest crowd that I got to know better, the chance to visit Louie's inventive workshop and way-off-the-beaten-path home. It was all good and worth twice the ride.

Thanks again to Heather and Pat and all the other 928PacNW organizers and members for providing such a great time.

Many thanks to the organizers Pat and Heather for putting on a great event. The location was spectacular, the food and accommodations first rate, and the company even better. I've read about many of you here on the list, and it was fun to meet in person. 928 people are the best!

My wife is rapidly becoming a 928 connoiseur. She especially liked Nicole's car, with it's posh and tastefully done interior. I may have to re-plan my Shark budget!

What a great event this was!. Bill and I took about 11 hours (including breaks) to get to Mt. Hood. It was a great drive with spectacular views and a few free car washes inbetween. We checked in at the Huckleberrry Inn (not recommended) and drove up to the hill to the beautiful Timberline Lodge. We were early, but found David and Alan at Ram's Head bar. Heather joined us shortly after, and the group started growing steadily.

Saturday morning was cold and overcast, but that does not deter real 928 fans from gathering and having fun. I got quite busy helping owners in finding the best match of interior materirals for their cars, and Pat raided my trunk even before I set up my vendor table (which we postponed until the dinner).

We had a great buffet lunch, followed by Loui Ott's presentation on the X-Pipe technology. It's quite amazing what a properly designed X-Pipe can do, but it became clear that it takes some serious research to find the right arrangement. Thanks, Loui, for educating us on this compex issue!

Next we got to see a very professionally done PowerPoint presentation on the rear turbo system by John Thomas. I had never followed the discussions about this system over here, as I felt it was counterintuitive to what I had heard about turbocharging. So it was extra interesting to hear how well thought through this system is, how well the components are designed, and how promising the results are long before the development has been finished. Thanks for this honest presentation, and for your openness about the setbacks you have had along the way!

We then took a break and went to the hotel rooms. Bill and I showed up again before dinner, so I could set up my vendor table. I wasn't even finished setting-up when other participants arrived and bombarded me with questions. It got a little chaotic, but smoothed out eventually. I missed the salad, bult got to enjoy the other wonderful courses of the dinner. And because I had purchased some extra raffle tickets upon registration, I walked out with two raffle prizes - we even managed to fit them into the already well loaded car.

Sunday morning was clear and sunny. It started with a great brunch for us overstuffed turkeys, followed by a nice lineup of our cars in front of picturesque Mount Hood. However, seeing the bullet holes in Pat's car, I was glad to get out of this crime ridden 'hood...

A fun drive led us to Mooser, where we stopped at a roadside ice cream, snack, and goodies shop that had countless 356 models parked in front of it. We proceeded to Loui's compound, which is only accessible by helicopter or gravel road. A separate building there is dedicated to advancing the 928 engineering and produce the ultimate streetable 928.

Bill and I now faced an estimated 12 hour drive back, so we left after a short time. The drive on 197 was great, with nice twisties and long straights that were bear-free. We stopped in Bend for sandwiches and gas, and then kept going until the winshield became opaque from all the Klamath Lake bugs, forcing a stop in Dorris, CA. We found that at the corner market there you can get a small cup of Cappuchino for $1, and it's better than Starbucks.

We proceeded down I-5 with one more stop that left us somewhat overstuffed. I drove the last leg and tried to make some time, but then the only defect of the trip hit: A headlight bulb went out and it became difficult at times to see where I was going at 90+mph. So we slowed down for the rest of the trip and arrived at Bill's house shortly after midnight.

Driving down from Bill's house, I noticed a Sherrif turning around in front of me and then following me closely. So I thought he wanted to give me a fix-it ticket for the light and decided to pull over where it was safe - this way he could either pass me or do whatever he intended. Well, we talked for a bit, he checked my license, and wished me a safe drive home and a good night. He was really nice, actually.

Now the car - which thanks to all the bugs looks as if it had a 3-day beard - is awaiting serious cleaning with the car care kit I won at the event.

Thanks Pat, and particularly Heather, for putting on this wonderful event!
