106K. Still a baby... hoping to put another 100K on it over the next... 20 years or so.

High mileage guys?
Are the 200K plus cars still on original engines? Has anyone dynoed (or compression/leakdown tested) a high mileage car to compare to a low mileage car? My guess is a well maintained 200K car will still make rated HP!

Giovanni, I'd be interested to see a compression check sometime.

200k miles are nothing on these engines. In fact, unless you have a thrust bearing failure, timing belt breakage, head gasket issue, or other defect caused by external forces, these engines last forever.

It's the other things that I'd worry about more - the periphery, such as torque tube, manual transmission, shocks, bushings, motor mounts, paint (chips),interior, etc - that's the stuff that wears out and eats up the big bucks. Engine? That would be the least of my worries...

Cool stuff everyone.

I bought my first 'high mileage' Shark recently with 135,000 on the odometer. Interestingly it seems more sound than 2 of the 3 928's I have/ had with fewer than 80k.

After the Heckowee Tour last week with a whole day of high revs it seems to be even stronger. It dynoed at 304/300 to the wheels a few weeks ago.

Jim
Goes to show that 928's don't do well in storage....they are designed to be driven! Maybe once a week (some of us), but you do need to drive them to keep things running well! It seems to be a paradox....you need to drive them, but adding lots of miles also adds lots of $$$ to the maintence expense? The cost of driving a supercar...might cost you some $$ but you'll sure enjoy it!

I just dynoed my '91 GT with 160k kms (100k miles). She put down 298 rwhp on a mustang dyno pre supercharger. That would put her at 340 HP vs stock rating of 326 HP.

I'm only at 146K miles on my 89, but it's had more miles in the last 5 years than in the PO's 10 years. It runs and looks almost like new except for a recent fender against garage door frame incident. Cruises at 170 with no complaints.

Hehe ... my '85 ran a total of less than 500 miles in its first 5 years of existence. Part of a large collection of supercars. Since then the PO and I have worked to change that, she now has 86k miles.

At 160k miles, my S4 put down 299 horses and foot-pounds to the pavement.

Heinrich, what about your old shark, the one that got 15,000 miles in a month? It should be up to 500,000 by now.

Joe, if I buy a quality compressor gauge I will post some numbers online. The motor mounts were "stocK" and also the oil pan gasket.

Hi there.

Three years ago I had a customer that drove a 1987 928S4 five speed everyday with 520,000 mile on it. He sold it on ebay about two years ago with 560 or 570k miles on it. Ran great. He bought it new and took good care of it.

Thanks,

Garrity

Giovanni, I did that MM job. Is that the ford anchor mounts I see?

Brian, I just had a compression check. All just above or just below 200 psi. Just breakin in. One thing is for sure, I would much rather putting in money for usage maintenence then sitting aroung rotting maintenence. I drive my car at least every other day if not every day. Love it as I did when I first got it.

Bill, Cruise at 170....You inspire me...

Garrity, You give me hope with that story.
