Service Info Tech 1989 S4 (WKD 495 521). Also, as one wise 928 owner used to say " Read the owners manual", it too has these instruction!

Curtis,
That changes the numerical read out from imperial to metric.
It does not change the written language.
See the link above.
Best,
Roger

Curtis,
You are a detail man I can see.

Just jump pin 5 to 13 (see back of cap for numbers) and follow the above instructions.

Jump pins 5 to 13 on the diag plug, near the seat and the door jam. turn on the key, let it sit for a bit, turn off the key, remove the jumper. that should do it.

Y'all set raght down and enjoy, ya heah?

It is still a German speaking dash ! Have tried the items that where listed from the folks in the know, but still nothing works. I know the lever operates in all positions, as I can make changes with it. The one thing that bothers me is that the center display box never shows anything. If it is stuck in diagnosis mode, at some point as I scroll through the different headings it should show a control unit code or something. If there is someone out there that has any more suggestions other than replacement, or who can speak German, please contact me. Thankyou.

OK, give us a recap, have you turned on the ignition, bridged 5 to 13, and held the stalk back for 3 seconds ?

Yes, I have the 9293 tool, and did try the 3 second hold with the ignition on.

Do the left and right display boxes display text consistent with T_Max's post https://rennlist.com/forums/showpost...9&postcount=19

Does the center display ever show anything? As in, when not trying to change the language, under normal conditions, when the engine is running, does the center display display temperature? Or fuel range? Or fuel consumption? Anything?

Also, Referring back to my first post - which referenced the same text as posts that followed - "The digital panel was first introduced in 1989 with “software level K18”. The dashboard language could be supplied in German, French, Italian or English and could NOT be changed"

further, from the reference text: From MY 1990 and software level K25 the language could be changed by a Porsche dealer by the use of special tool 9293 ...

You indicate that your customer as a 1989 928. Thus logically:

if the customer car's dash has not been updated to the K25 software level then the language cannot be changed.

Can anyone confirm the method of determining what software level the dash is running? I *think* that the software level is displayed in the center display for a few seconds when the dash gets power (i.e. after the battery is reconnected.)

Which, if true, does Scott no good if the center display is kaput.

Okay, the center display does not show anything while scrolling through the different headings. Its been a long time since I last activated one of these systems, but as far as I can remember ( and according to the diagnosis manual for the dash ) it should at some point show the K18 or the K25 in the center display.Even when the battery or the instrument cluster have been disconnected the center display still shows nothing.I have not tried it with the car running, except for yesterday while disconnecting the battery ground the display flashed a couple of times and I noticed that all 3 displays went to a blocked out looking screen. Then I left the screen in that phase and took the car for a drive. Nothing changed, and the digital read out went back to the same sh.. if you touched the stalk.

I was incorrect. The software version level is not displayed when the power is cycled. I disconnected the battery on my '89 this morning to see what happened on the dash when power was reconnected. The K-level is not shown. However, a - presumably - software revision date is shown in the center display. In the case of my '89GT "19.05 1988" is displayed which one might assume stands for "May 19th, 1988." IIRC my '91 GT displays a 1990 date.

Also, to cycle through the normal operating modes of the display (e.g. temperature, MPG, range, etc.) the ignition must be on; the engine does not need to be running. Thus, if with the ignition on, the center display is blank when cycling through the operating displays (i.e. press lever away from the driver, and then cycle through the display by moving the lever up and/or down) then the cluster's health is suspect.

I followed the above described procedure on my '91 Euro GT and successfully changed the language in the display from German to English. I did not have the bridge tool 9293 so I manually jumped pins 5 and 13. Perhaps you should try the procedure with a manual jumper.

Since mine is a '91, I do not have to repeat the procedure when power is lost (battery disconnected). Mine retains the set language in this situation.
