Default 928 Noob needs help!

Took the plunge and bought a one-owner Weissach. The PO was a doof and had all work done by others - thankfully this one was worth saving. Anyhow, I have no knowledge of the car and have no paper. Although she runs great, I need emergency info in the event of [insert disaster] and in particular don't even know where the battery is. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Battery is under the rear storage area on the left side. Remove the carpet. Then, there is a panel that removes from the left and uncovers the uninflated spare tire, air piump, jack and tire wrench. The battery compartment is under the spare tire.

Hey DJ, Welcome. Glad to see a few new arrivals in one week. I too just under 2 yrs ago was a newbie and new nothing zippo zilch about these cars. I think I have come a long way since then. You need some immediate stuff. You can get the workshop manual on disk for like 30-40 bucks or you can get the hard manuals for only a couple of hundred now. They were going for over 500 on ebay. I recommend the hard copy since they are new updated 9 volume. You can get them at 928 intl or 928 specialist. They are site sponsors. These really are a must if your going to own this car.

Second is you must try to determine the the condition of the timing belt. Try to find out when it was last done and more importantly when it can be proven it was done. Although you have a pre interference car, a timing belt failure sucks royal. If the belt needs changing i would not recommend that job to a newbie but it certainly is not impossible especially with all the help on this site you will get.

I am sure you will have more questions so post away. That is what this site is all about. And I would recommend shelling out the 50 or so bucks to become a member. A lot of time other members offer free stuff to other members or free shipping. Heck, even the help you will get is by far worth it.

Hey DJ
As stated the battery is under the spare under the rear hatch. But if you need to jump you dont need to access the battery. There is a jumping post on the pass side in the engine compartment near the front. To learn about the car you want the factory manuals...there are no other remotly useful manuals. I think they can be had on CD for not too much money.

DJ, just a word of potentially valuable advice, should you wind up with a dead battery, it is much better to substitute another battery, or disconnect yours and charge it. I am not sure about your model year, but the S4 and later models are VERY sensitive to electrical issues and you could fry your injection computer and it is MAJOR money to replace. I assure you that you could purchase a new battery every month and still come out ahead on buying a new brain box. Take care and welcome to the club.

Sponge,
I'd be wary of calling your 928's PO a doof. It sounds like he had the good sense to recognize his own limits and trusted his Weissach (and his $$$) to someone with more knowledge and skills. You are the lucky recipient of his decision. How about some pics of your new Weissach. Did you get the custom luggage, too? Welcome to the 928 community.

The B+ terminal under the hood should only be used to jump start if a battery is weak,as tring to use that terminal to start a car with a 0 volt dead battery is not a good idea as it goes to the back of the alternator thru a 8 guage wire first and then to the starter terminal.Thats a lot of connections that have to handle the 300 or so amps that it takes to start a V-8 engine. If the engine didn't fire right up and you continued to crank you might let the smoke out of the wiring harness.....and thats not fun!

If you don't have one already, get a spare key made. Don't want to have the car lock itself on you with the keys in the ignition. It is a pain in the butt. Get the manuals from Jim. Worth their weight in gold.

Welcome!!

Wow, you bought a 928 without knowing a thing about the car. Who's the doof here??

Sounds to me like the previous owner had the money to get the work done correctly - by professionals who know what they're doing. Too many people try to do the work themselves because they think they can save money - and the car ends up suffering for it. Good luck with your car. But I suspect you're in for an eye-opening experience.

While letting the insult slide, I'll thank most of the posters for their kind and welcoming words. Not to be too elaborative on the subject, I am not a professional mechanic but do know my way around a car and also do know my limitations. More importantly, I did have the chance to take the car into a 928 specialty shop (recommended on this very forum) for the initial evaluation and was surprised to find it in good shape but it also had some quirky fixes that needed to be reconciled. After I pulled the trigger, I had them address the major things beyond me out of the way (yes, I have money and knew what I was getting into).

The advice to get the manuals is good. I've spend plenty of time perusing the forum posts on things that I have interest in tackling. This vehicle is intended to be taken from mostly ignored by an PO that was not a gearhead to the great ride similar to how it was originally made.

General condition at purchase: Externally great except for the front spoiler that had been curbed and someone has ruined the anodized gold wheels with Brasso or some other crap. Engine with ZERO oil leaks anywhere at 62K, timing belt done recently but with mismatched toothing on the belt and gear cogs. No electrical issues discovered (yet). Tranny solid but needed servic. Fuel system relatively clean. Interior with only a couple of sun spots on the leather, no tears or holes, and only the pod cracked in one place, dirty but intact carpeting; sunroof motor assembly dysfunctional; A/C freezing cold front and rear. Brakes in need of pads. First resonator with some holes.

First work: belt/gear issue corrected, all rubber under the hood replaced along with the water pump, new plugs, tranny serviced, new pads all around (not totally happy with the braking but will address later), sunroof cables, tracks, etc. replaced.

No, the jughead PO tossed the luggage long ago. I've already dismissed the idea of obtaining a knock-off set. Along with that, he tossed the manuals and Weissach certificate.

Yes, a set of manuals is en route already. That was a no brainer. Second keys coming too - thanks b/c I had no idea the doors could auto-lock.

Pix coming relatively soon - I have it on stands in the garage while I clean and adjust, etc.

DJ
