Isn't that what Big Says in his sig line? Well, I did it!

If you recall there was a discussion, recently, about having your fog lights stay on with the highbeams. This is something I've wanted to do for sometime. So I look at Nichol's site, print the directions, and get to work.

Everything is going swimingly, the F1 race was on the tube (the farce that it was!) the wife was sitting in a chair reading the newspaper, kids were next door playing with the neighbors and I was knee-deep in the fuse panel.

I make the mods, hook up the ground, turn on the ignition.

Fog lights come on..... check
headlights rotate up..... check
headlights are on..... check
let's try higbeams..... spary wife by accidently hitting headlight washer instead of highbeam switch.... check
hit "real" highbeam switch.... xxxxxxxx nothing

Hmmmmm. Maybe I screwed up - it's happened before. Investigate, everything looks good. Try it again. Now I have no headlights (high or low) at all! So I put everything back to where it was. Still no headlights!

I've checked all the fuses, and everything checks out. So now I'm thinking that I must have blown the relay by trying ot have the headlights (H4's) and the fogs on at the same time....

SO here are my questions. Are there any in-line fuses I need to check? Or should I just order up a new relay, put it in and stop monkeying with stuff that works?

OK heinrich... I need you to walk me through this one.

First where is the "lamp control module"? Is it a relay/fuse? How do i check it?

Second, all I could do to check the relay was hit the highbeam switch. I could feel it clicking, but beyond that, I don't know how to check it.

DR and brother .... very cool .... Andrew, if you pull the glovebox interior casing, after unplugging the glovebox light in the corner where my LH sits (dunno what u have there) .... you will see the lamp control module attached to the glovebox on the outnside right. However let's not jump to conclusions, a clicking relay is usually a good relay. Check the relay output for 12V. And if the relay clicks that means afaik that the lamp control module is working too. So, what would cause lights not to work then ... blown bulb filaments? Check first for power up front and trace backwards ....

Andrew, you brave soul - daring to tread where .... .
Thanks to DR, you can now pull the cover off the double sized relay and look inside for a burned set of contact points, etc. Actually, there are 3-4 mini relays within the case according to the circuit diag: It is similar in concept to the BMW 'LKM' ( light control module) - and I've had a few of those apart for similar stuff. They usually survive the surgery ...

I suppose I could have blown the bulb fillament, but the way it happened... well it just didn't seem like they burned out, but I suppose it could have happened. I'll give it a check just in case tonight, but my guess is that's it's the relay.

As for the lamp control module, I searched the archives, and isn't that part of the central warning system so that if a bulb goes out you get the dummy light? I don't think it actually controls the lighting itself, or am I wrong here? It would be like having redundant relays - doesn't make sense.
