Do yourself a big favor. AFTER you've finished putting everything back together take the four bolts out of the engine brace, scrape the rest of the paint off it and replace it.

You can't tell from the pics, but other than looking like crap, it's bent. I haven't decided what replacement it's getting yet.

I just reallized how bad those pics look. I should've used the flash. The block and oil pan actually have a shine to them now. They were both black before.

Here is a pic from earlier this week which was a HUGE improvement over when I started. (You can see how bent the brace is in this pic.)

Mr Dog -
You can simply scrape the paint off the brace (like Ernest suggested), buy some aluminum polish and polish the brace by hand. While you are at it you can polish the top of the radiator too! Took less than 1 hour to polish both.

The WP bolts are new from 928 Specialists (they're in the ziplock hidden behind the WP in the third picture). All of the other bolts will be used (unless I can't find them and have to replace them tomorrow). I rolled the tensioner arm pivot bolt on a table to make sure it's straight, and it's good. Every bolt will get a dab of copper antiseize.

Due to a raging hangover (my body's way of saying "Haha, you're one year older") I didn't get much done today. The WP, tensioner, cam gears, and oil pump gear are on. It turns out that I tapped one of the helicoiled holes a little sideways, so I needed to grind about 1mm out of one of the WP holes.

IT RUNS!

It is smogpumpless (it wasn't connected to the cat anyway). I still have some more work to do. I didn't put the covers on so that I could see everything.

The belt tracks well on all the gears except the passenger cam gear. The gear seems to wobble a bit and the belt runs back and forth. It doesn't get to the edges of the gear.

It still won't start without help.

Somebody please address this. I started the car again (jumper cables from battery to engine compartment works) and this wobbling cam gear is really starting to worry me. It's a new gear.

That would be great, but I think I have to work all next weekend. Maybe I'll have to suddenly become ill later this week.

Here's what it all looks like now. The closeup is of the wobbling gear. I checked both the large bolt and the small nuts. Everything appears to be seated flat.

Matt,

Wobbling gear is bad. I would check the "spider" behind the gear for damage. I would think either the spider is bad, the gear is not seated and torqued properly, or possibly worst case the nose of the cam has some damage.

Are you sure the gear is wobbling and not just odd tracking of the belt? I would fix this before running or driving if it was my car. Just my opinion, hopefully someone else will jump in.
