Paul, not that I doubt your grasp of the history of Porsche, but IMHO, there are no Porsches that aren't Porsches. Even puristically defined, every Porsche ever made contains VW components. Including the 928. So ...

Taking that in one of many possible tangents, as opposed to your chosen one, a 911 is the only real Porsche ever made. Why? Because it defined the company.

And yet another ... the Carrera GT .... or the 356 .... or the 917 ... or the 935 ... or the 962 .... the list is almost endless ... it is as long as the list of all Porsche models ever made.....

Dude, knocking boots with random Coyote Uglies is no way to replace SITM.

What about the story that the reason they picked a front-engined, water cooled, RWD V8 was because that was what the US was making, and it was extremely unlikely that the car could be legislated out of the US market? That's actually quite a bit of a compromise, as it's fairly acknowledged that a mid engine car is the optimal layout (although the 928 is pretty close to being a mid-front layout).

Although I think hatchbacks are the ultimate in practical car design, so that alone puts the 928 pretty high up in my rankings.

Im not sure that mid engine really is the optimal layout for a GT car.

I just bought a mid-engine car a few weeks ago. I thought there was something wrong with the suspension! There is not, it's just the car bounces around the center of mass and I am not used to it. Its ride is no match for the 928.

The source of components - transmission, gauges from VDO, rack from ZF, Bosch electrics, interior subcontracts (perhaps) is not really of concern.

I was adding more substance to how the 928 came about, the engineering of the car, the concept and detail design of it. The decision makers, down the the people on the drawing boards. It completely broke new ground for the company, which was the intent.

Quite true. Mid engine (whether in front or behind the driver), decent storage, or 4 seats - pick any 2. You really compromise on space when you need to get everything between the 2 axles. Not that those +2 on the 928 are much to sneeze at, but at least it's an option.

It would be nice if more GT's where hatchbacks. Looks like the new Jag XK is going have a hatch. Since it's based on the same chassis/engine as the DB9, it would be even more the new 928 than the Aston Martin is.

Careful now, some folks mistake hatchbacks for stationwagons.

And hence, they probably drive an SUV, which is both.
