I can see where reading the 928 electrical diagrams could be a daunting task for someone without an electronics background. I work with Electrical diagrams on a daily basis for test and evaluation of tractors for the experimental division of John Deere Construction Equipment, so if anyone needs help I would be happy to decipher 928 stuff for them. We test and compare tractors from different mfgr's as well as our own so the diagrams I come in contact with are pretty varied.

All,
Bumping this back up. OK I'm back from China (which was no cooler than Phoenix!) - for a few days now. I did get some good time in on the plane writing this up. Organization is probably the biggest issue. I've been scanning in some wiring diagram examples also - time consuming to say the least... I've started just cutting out snippets from an on-line version - quicker.

Anyway I'm close to sending out the 1st draft - few days more...

*** First though back to the previous request. Send me PM's as requested..!!!

>>>>>
" I'd like to solicit from the volunteers only (but pls feel free to continue to volunteer) your thoughts on what are your individual prioritized top 3 difficulties with the current wiring diagrams. Keep it to a fairly generic level (e.g. connectivity, relays, how to tap power, symbols, central electric - that kind of level) rather than any specific single fix you struggled with.

Along with these Top 3 issues what did you wish you had that would have helped? (other than a fairy godmother of course...)

Please think about it and PM ME ONLY PLEASE so we don't unduly influence others opinions !!!
(I'll summarize later the overall outcome).
<<<<<<<<

I REALLY NEED YOU TO SEND ME YOUR THOUGHTS!!

And a big thanks to Paul for doing it already! I'kll send you all PM's also!!

Alan

Ok all,
Its not too late to respond to my last message. Thanks go to Paul, Alex, Bill, Malcolm, Dave A, Brian, Garth and Ed for their responses.

Summarizing concensus points so far:

1) Several people struggle with the most basic connectivity between diagrams, but almost everyone struggles with central electric connectivity to the rest of the diagrams, and internal central electric connections.

2) Many people are confused by the Porsche circuit numbering standards

3) Some folks need help loccting things in the car (connectors/modules etc) Various additional cross-referencing would be useful.

4) There is interest in basic operating information about Relays, switches etc

5) Color coding is a bit of a mystery to many.

6) Some worked examples as well as basic convention explainations would be helpful - especially for alternator, battery etc or typical aftermarket additions

7) Non-engineering types find many of the symbols fairly confusing/ meaningless

8) A suggestion was made for a means of doing hypertex linkages between on-line (say pdf) version of schematics for connectivity and maybe some cross reference table data also.

I'm referencing this as your combined input to the process - I think we can address most of these issues adequately well ultimately - but no commitments to everything yet.

Please note that while I said I would send my early draft version out this week - it has (of course) taken more time than expected!

I am however now just about ready to send out my Rev0 version to those of you interested as reviewers. I'm assuming this is the list I already sent PM's to. If you want to be added please PM me as in my previous post.

The document currently is in MS Word, called "Porsche 928 Wiring Diagram Primer Revision 0" it is about 1.1Mbytes currently but growing. Eventually I anticipate converting to Adobe Acrobat format.

Please PM to let me know where I should mail it to - ensure you have the ability to receive a document this big.

Note that the content is copyright to me and that by agreeing to be a reviewer you agree not to forward it to others (just let me know if someone else wants a copy for review), you also agree to provide some feedback.

If you have limited electrical knowledge your feedback may be simply what you understood and what you didn't, areas that are missing and basic spelling/grammar/formatting and readability issues.

If you have some content knowledge I expect you will review the material for correctness, possible clarifications and any proposed additional or alternate material. If you'd be willing to write sections for possible inclusion I'll be happy to talk to you about what you think you can provide.

I do expect to eventually make the final product available to members of rennlist and as active reviewers you will all get regular updates as this project progresses.

If you have strong HTML skills, or you have some time available to sort through the schematics there are some data organization projects you could take on that will be benefit the end result and or allow development of some additional tools.

Thanks,
Alan

All,
I have sent out the 928 Wiring Diagram Primer - Revision 0.0 to those who have already sent me their emails, not so many so far - 5 at current count ... If you want a copy I need your email address. It has now grown to 2.3MB so this may not be/or stay practical for long I may have to split it up into sections.

Let me know if 2.3MB is too much for you to digest...

Those of you who get to review Rev 0.0 - please post only general FB here - for detailed comments & revisions sent them to me in email (not PM's - thats too hard to organize).

Bump back up!

Ok Reviewers have had the document for almost a week now. I've asked them for specific feedback individually by email.

Its not too late to sign up as a reviewer - you'll just get revision 0.1 on the next release.

Overall though to the reviewers are we headed in the right direction - any major course corrections? With work to clarify will this adress your major concerns (including the ones I summarized)

I'm interested in purchasing the final product. I'm not engineering oriented other than desire; I have proofing experience if you still need help. How about assigning sections so files are smaller?

The second revision (Version 0.1) is now out for review. There is significant expansion of content.

Those on the original reviewer list should all have a copy by now. I did not remove anyone yet for failure to provide feedback - athough only ~half have done so... you know who you are...

I know you all intend to do it.... so another chance. The value of the end result is very dependant on getting useful feedback on how well it works for you? whether you are an expert or not... In fact the FB from non-experts is probably more useful as a gauge of how effective this will be - since the experts will eventually figure it out for themselves anyway!

I will be gone on vacation next week 8/1 - 8/10 so any additional requests to join as a reviewer need to be sent in the next 2 days... Only volunteer if you are willing to provide FB...

Feedback is due by Wednesday 8/10 ~2 weeks.

I think the main sections of the doc are now getting close to done...

This release does not include the "suggestions & how-to sections" - these will be targeted for complete drafts after the main body is through the next review phase.

Alan

Steve G & Others PM me your email address if you want a copy - you need to be able to recieve a big document ~ 2.8MB zipped...

Alan:

Thanks for doing this. I did read the first version and honestly had only minor feedback on errors that you or others caught. Sorry I did not send it anyway.

Please send the new version to my gmail account: billball@gmail.com

I WILL read and feedback. I need this document to help me solve my current weirdo electical problems.

Thanks!
