rixter,
from an '87 harness i have:
1-blue
3-small blue/white
5-small blue/yellow
7-empty
9-small black
11-empty
13-red/white

2-heavy black
4-heavy blue/white
6-heavy blue/yellow
8-empty
10-brown
12-empty
14-heavy white (or yellow)

the colors were some faded and the small means smaller gauge, heavy heavier gauge.
hope that's it.

Rixter, That 14 point connector sure does look familiar. Mine broke in the same place. Try cleaning the wires to find the right colors. That helped mine somewhat.
Good luck, David

rixter,
that heavy gauge red looking wire is the same gauge at least as the one that looks yellow/white on my harness.

I saw that Tom.. look like everything else is close to identical colors so tomorrow I'll go thru it..
right now I have an issue with the alternator that needs fixing before I can start it anyway
will let you know tomorrow how it matches up and will write it all down for future reference

Rixter,

On my 86.5 the sheathing that encases the wires that feed into that connector is loose and can be "milked" back a bit so you can see a section of the wire insulation that has not been heat soaked and discolored. If your '88 is anything like my 86, the wires have changed to various shades of redish brown from all that engine heat, so try and push back that sheathing that bundles them together and see if you can tell what the "real" colors are.

Here's the response I got from Scott C. when I asked the same question, some months back. BTW, my colors didn't exactly match these either.
Terminal Color Size (sq.mm) Circuit
1.Blue 1.0 Alt. Exciter
2 Blue/black 1.0 oil pressure sender
3 Blue/yellow 1.0 Coolant Temp sender
4 Blue/white 1.0 Oil Pressure sender
5 Blue/Green 1.0 Coolant Temp Sender
6 Green/blue 1.0 Oil level switch
7 Red/white 1.0 Supplementary Air Valve
8 Open
9 Black 1.5 AC Lowpressure Switch
10 Blk/yellow 1.5 Starter-Ignition box
11 Open
12 Open
13 Open
14 Yellow 4.0 Starter Solenoid

Good Luck

Rixter,

For an 88 its close to the above:

1. Blue 1.0 Alt. Exciter
2 Blue/black 1.0 oil pressure sender
3 Blue/yellow 1.0 Coolant Temp sender
4 Blue/white 1.0 Oil Pressure sender
5 Blue/Green 1.0 Coolant Temp Sender
6 Green/Blue 1.0 Oil level switch
7 Open
8 Open
9 Open
10 Open
11 Open
12 Open
13 Open
14 Open

Its on page 97-289 connector: T18

Note that pins 3 & 4 are shown out of sequence so could be a mistake but I think not based on other years having different connector coding & drawings & the same colors/functions. Seems you probably only have 6 wires looking at the photo - I agree the colors have probably changed due to heat (no browns in sight!!)

The wiring diagrams show all the wires the same size - obviously not true from your photo - I'd assume this is
pin 1 - is it blue under there?

Alan

PS any update on parts?

That connector is a common failure item. Mine came apart too. It is available from most dealers as it also fits something on a 911. I would reccomend stripping back some of the insulation on the harness to see if you have melted wires inside. You will also be able to read the color codes on the wires better. I fixed a bunch of intermittant gauge problems, and charging issues with new wires routed from the alternator area.

For the numbering, I think the big fat one is the yellow 4.0(gauge) and it should go to 14 on the 88 harness. That's the one that causes the loom to melt on the inside as it is hot when the starter is engaged. When I redid mine, I used a soldering iron and disconnected all the wires from the pins, stripped them all back to new wire, tinned the wires, then soldered them back to the pins. Several looked like they were cold soldered, or had high resistance.

I think I finally got it... by opening the bottom piece I was able to match all but 2 wires, these I could make out in the couple pics I had..
here's the final on this car (I hope)
1 blue
2 blue/blk
3 blue/ylw
4 blue/wht
5 blue/grn
6 grn/blue
7 open
8 open
9 black
10 brown/blue
11 open
12 open
13 green
14 yellow
I did end up stripping back about 4 inches of wire to be able to read some of them
thanks for all the help folks... this weekend I put the last couple things on and crank her up
