Default race weekend recap

What a long weekend. It all started good but on Saturday I broke something in qualifing while shifting from 4th to 5th. I coasted off the track and towed it back to the pits as I was not getting anything in any gear. Andrea Moore was nice enough to lend me his 928 for Saturdays race so I could get some points. I had to start last but made up 10 positions to finish 4th in class. Saturday night I took my car back to the shop but got totally confused when I was able to back the car up in reverse. I next tried the rest of the gears and they all worked. I drove around the parking lot and tried to put some load on things and it let go again but once up on the hoist it was back to working. The final discovery was that I broke the short shaft in the clutch but it was friction welding itself back together with very limited capability. After 3 hours sleep and a 2 hour drive back to the track things were looking up. I qualified 1st in class and 7th overall for Sundays race and was able to get up to third by turn one and second by turn 6. Unfortunatley I did not have enough tire to keep those positions but I did finish first in class and 5th overall. I don't care what Kibort says about trash can tires they just aren't as good.

Great job! Hey, i with you on the trash can tires now! ive tossed out a potencial class record and several good battles due ot bad used tires. (notice i have catagories of trash can tires)
Im on to my very last set of trash can hoosiers July 10th at T-hill, but these are from your buddy GT3 trash can, so im hoping for some good stick.

in the future, the only used tires i will trust for a weekend will be the used RA1s from SpeedGT!! at least they are decent and wont cost you a race or many positions! I dont know about the slick world!!

Hey, great job. would have loved to have seen it.

how was the temps???pretty hot up north here, i can only imagine the heat out in the desert!

Yes. In 15 plus years of racing 928's I have never broke that and that's a good thing.

So, why the 1:26 on lap 3 while your usual competors were running their usual 1:23-4s!!!!!????? (and doing it on lap 7 etc) tires that bad???

You better get the results change for Andre's car run on Sat. they still have him listed at 1:31.xx for the finish. is that a stroker car, but not set up well?

Did you see the R5 group again? still running 1:28s. yet, a stock 928 has to run at 3500lbs vs the 911s at 2100lbs!!! good luck for it to run anything under 1:33!!!!

also, Mulvill!!! he is getting down there in that cup car! 1:26s!

Yes, my tires were that bad (typical racer excuse). As you know my tire of choice is the Goodyear radial slick but my source has been out so I was using some Yoko's and Hoosiers I got in the trash. I normaly can do 1:24's all day long with the occasional 1:23 but the best I could get all weekend was a 1:25.1 with the Yoko's. There was not enough left in them to run a complete race so I had to use the harder Hoosier gran am spec tire and they had been heat cycled to death.

That is a stroker and that was the best I could do in his car without taking any risks. His car does need some help with the setup. The rear shocks were hard on the bump stops and it needed some caster in the front. His car was much more difficult to drive than mine but that is what set up is all about and how important it is. You can't go fast if you aren't comfortable. A 928 starts out as a very easy car to drive at the limit but it is amazing how bad you can make it by something as simple as not enough travel in the rear.

Thanks,
It's been a while since I've raced in FL (Daytone 1997) but I'd love to come back. It's just such a long haul. When are you on the track next?
