Default Pre-Cut Window Tinting Film

This might make the DIY window tinting really easy.... Pre-cut window film on eBay:

Anyone try it?

I did not see any mention of the brand or type of film being used...very important for longevity. Should have a metallic or ceramic based layer within the film., otherwise it will only last a couple of years...
"will not turn purple after a year"....how about two years? The good films come with lifetime warranties.
Nasty stuff to remove if it goes bad.
Get good film.

I thought about DIY, but heard the cries. Takes heat (with the right tint that stretches properly) to put in the side hatch windows. It's tough to get that huge hatch window perfect with one sheet too. Get the pros to do it. It costs more, but like Derek said it's a pain to get that stuff out if you goof it up.

The guy I used guarantees it for life. He even noticed a scratch on the driver's window and said he will even replace the driver/passenger tint if the mechanisms inside scratch it before I get the new felt put in.

For my time and $$$, this is one job that I let a pro do. They can do the whole car in an hour or two depending on what you get done and you walk out. DONE. Unless you tint windows every day, this is one job that is more art than science...

I tinted my 928 and it took about 4 hours. The real work was cutting the tint, after it took about 10 minutes per window. You will need to have heat gun though (and be carefull not to bust your window). The rear side windows are not as difficult as they appears to be. I tried tinting the back window, that was a bitch to tint (2 piece). Hmmm, the car looks great without the rear window tinted anyways :-)). I will try to tint it again this weekend. Total cost including heat gun: $60.00 and I have enough material to redo the rear hatch twice.

OK, DIY is not for everyone. If I needed to save some more time, I wouldn't own a 928. Just a little pre-planning can make it right the first time.

I Googled "Pre-cut tinting film" and see that a number of firms provide this same service. I'd guess that some shops save time by buying pre-cut films.

Here's one that claims to pre-heatshrunk to fit the curvature of the window:

I guess it comes down to what's your time worth?

This is one of those tasks I was happy to pay an expert to do for me.

I did it on Saturday and I don't get paid in the weekends anyways :-) so my time is free. Definetly not something for everyone. From scale of 1 to 10, I will rate the outcome an 8 (looks great from 5 feet away though). When I get my brandnew porsche I will consider paying $$ to have it tinted.

It always amazes me how a man can't even fry rice like a Chinaman, but will try to do something even more complicated than that on his own without experience ...

I tinted cars for several years and would love to see this precut concept. I have my doubts that it's very good. Cutting the tint is only half the battle. It takes a long time to learn the best techniques/tricks for prepping and cleaning the glass.
No DIY is going to get the job as clean as a pro... Pay and be happy
