When parking my -81 today suddenly the steering wheel moved almost 45 deg, but wheels were stuck in the same position??
Drove very carefully home to try and see what went wrong.
It is now a bit loose around the middle and requires quite a lot of power when doing sharp turns when driving.
No visible oil leaks and both wheels seems still to be paralell.
When engine is turned off and I try to turn the wheels, the steering wheel moves but wheels doesn't??(with a lot of resistance and some noice though)
My garage is full with the -90 in the air so this have to wait until that is done.
Any ideas of what's wrong here?
Cheers/Peter

Inspect the front knuckles and linkages (ball joints, tie rod ends, etc.) Assuming things are good there, I'd begin to suspect the u-joint in the steering column. I hope it's simple.

There is a rubber bushing on the steering shaft half way between the upper u-joint on the column and the lower u-joint (which attaches to the rack) This bushing absorbs vibrations but it can fail BUT Porsche designed it with metal tabs which prevent complete steering failure ...GOOD IDEA ! my old Jaguar XK150 had no such fail safe

Thanks for the inputs, I have marked the steering shaft visible in the engine bay to see if it moves when turning the steering wheel.
(no extra help at hand right now)
It doesn't move when turning the wheel and engine is shut off.
Leads me to think that problem lies inside the car, is there a joint between the wheel and the firewall?
If so how do I gain access to it?
(I can feel notches toutching when the steering wheel spins, could it be a clamp that has gone loose at the joint inside the car?)
Jaguar XK150, wow Jim that is a beautiful car!!
