Hi Nicole,
You will probably get a better answer from Rich, however, the main PCB is $1000 if you can get one.
I bought one about a year ago and it was one of the last if not theeee last. Will they make some more - who knows?
The mileage is in a chip on the PCB. If it is new and when fitted you have about 250 miles to enter the old mileage or it defaults back to start at zero. I reset mine to my old mileage.
The simpler circuit board that holds the bulbs is about $120.
The computer readout (seperate unit) is $400.
Needless to say I have spares of all these parts after my issues.
The guages them selves are rpairable as individual units, however the people who repair them like "Palo alto speedo" will not touch the complete assembly as they have no way of testing it.

Rich repaired my old PCB and I am about to test it in my S4 and will post the results.
If succersful (and I am sure it will be) we will have a source for repair of the PCB's.
Thanks to Rich.

Roger,
You sound like a pro, cool

I'm busy with the "German Rennlist" www.pff-online.de they found out that anchor makes replacement mounts for our cars. I'm working with them right now to buy and ship all these mounts to various people in Germany. Right now we are up to 54 Anchor Mounts!!!

If the electronics shown in those pictures ever fail, can those be rebuilt, or is our only choice a $3k part that soon will be no longer available?
Where is the mileage of a 928 stored - is it in this computer inside the instrument panel?
Is a 928 driveable, if that computer fails?

Thanks!
Hello Nicole,

There are many types of electronic failures, the majority being circuit board, connection (solder joints, connectors) and component. The art of repair is being able to determine which type of failure occurs and then effect a repair. One of the real problems for any repair is the failure of a component that is no longer available. The choices are to harvest good componets from old modules or create a replacement component or circuit.

The board pictures that I posted are the controllers for the instrument cluster and the trip computer. The odometer function is provided by the controller. If either of these boards fail, your 928 will still run.

Back to the pod electronics. Much of the circuitry on them is simple gate logic. AND, OR, NAND, NOR in quad modules called, euphimistically enough DIP modules. These components are easily found and can be replaced rather easily. It's the micro proc, and the firmware, or dedicated memory modules that become a problem. I suspect that the microP, and PROM (Programmable Read only Memory) will be somewhat harder to source. I know this was discussed in a thread before, but someone should have a copy of the PROM contents already backed up on a file somewhere. There are several makers of PROMs that can be substituted, but the firmware image is the sticky part.

I know ther are several versions for 89-91, and different versions for US, Japan, etc. So a good copy of the firmware would be several files. Repairing the solder joints is only part of the job, but apparently a pretty big one based on the number of cold solder joints discovered! Machine soldering is kind of an art, and even when things are setup perfect, mistakes can happen. None of the parts are human soldered, unitl they are taken apart by us. If anone needs repair in the DFW area, I USED to be a NASA certified repairman. That means I can fix most solder, and electircal board problems that don't include multi-layer issues. Even some multi or inter layer issues can be fixed, but without a working example, yer flyin' blind.

If you don't get satisfaction from the pod repair, remember that the bigharness that goes across the front of the engine carries high currant from the alternator, along side the sensor wires for voltmeter, oil pressure and level. Mine was melted, and had to be rebuilt from the crossover

Nah, just small talk... Shocki is encouraging me to visit the German Porsche Fan Forum again, and I said I hope to meet some German 928 freaks in Stuttgart in August. You could have lived the rest of your life happily without this information...

Good job... spread the love! I would think they'd be able to get the Ford mounts over there instead of having them shipped, but I guess they could be insanely expensive.

According to the WSM, the two screws at the back of the steering wheel are torx T 30 screws. The procedure is listed on page 68-6.
