I don't think that was the case. The guy lectured me for about a minute about how he could lose his MA testing license if - since the bays faced the street - an "inspector" drove by. He was pretty adamant about it.

No sweat of my back in any case since the 'good' place's testing bays are in the rear.

Wow, and I thought they acted like the SS over here in Kali.... What do they think, you're going to huff and puff and blow the exhaust away from the sniffer? Jeez... the way I see mechs lean on unprotected fenders, drag cables across them, etc. I just stay away from shops as much as I can.... Also, next time I'm due for smog I'm bringing my fender covers along...

Well, two things come to mind......a) both cars I had tested last week are AWD all the time. The dyno can only accomodate a two wheel drive car (at this shop, anyway. However, I had my truck tested there in the past, not AWD and it did not get a dyno run. b) Maybe my guy just does not know what he is doing....On one car he plugged in the computer log reader, on the other car he did not....He didn't check the gas caps on either car. He shook a front wheel on one car and not the other. No horn check on either car......

Sure. I have two AWD cars that get tested at this place too.

And this is more-or-less why I'm interested in finding the regs. I have heard all sorts of different stories about dyno testing in MA and I'd like to get to the bottom. I've heard:

1) non-optional for 2wd vehicles
2) optional - owners discretion
3) 16" wheels max (?) (reason my current shop uses for not dyno testing the '28s)

.............AND , What did he say after that?!
