I'm gonna kill the emissions kid....

Emissions? Down here in Bama we are lucky enough not to have inspections (open pipes all the way). Down side is the car in front of you may fall apart at any moment.

Punks are not allowed to work on my car. If they show up, I just tell them I've changed my mind and drive away. There are plenty of good certified technicians out there that deserve and appreciate our business.

There's nothing that gets me stressed into a sociopathic haze... except the mental image of the average inspection station employee casually sticking the floor jack under the 928 without even bothering to check for the existence of jack points. It takes about one quarter of a second for that image to get me into a red rage.
Luckily I found an inspection station (yes Gretch - in MA) that knows what they are allowed to do and what I am by-God going to do. I get to drive the car into the bay. I get to position the jack. I get to.... you get the picture. At this point getting all three 928s inspected (along with the other toys) is a no-stress event.
Initially it did take one "training session" with these folks. Once they figured out that
a) I will bring them a car that will pass
b) I am a car guy
c) their lives would be happier, less stressful, and quite a bit longer if they allowed me to politely work with them
we got along pretty well.
This thread also reminds me of the time my wife and I pulled up to a restaurant in the '91. Jane got out to check on the wait time. While I was waiting in front of the place a crotch-of-the-pants-at-his-knees wastoid of a teenager, but otherwise garbed in the livery of the restaurant, came up to the car and asked me if I was going to valet park. My very simple straightforward deadpan response was "are you on crack?"

I will PM the name to any MA Shark owner.
Why? I've been told that according to MA law the owner of the car is not allowed to be in the bay when the car is being tested and the station can lose their license to test. Now that I think about it - there's a lot things we 'been told' that are not true (like the fact that the dyno test is mandatory - it isn't.) I should probably look up the actual regs.
In any case, I have been to other inspection stations where, after pulling the car in to the bay, I was ushered outside. My immediate response was the polite form of "excuse me? WTF?" at which point I was told the above. My response was C YA LATER.

I've been looking around for the actual regs - 310 CMR 60.02 covers the "Enhanced Motor Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance Program" we (in MA) have all come to know an love. So far I haven't found any evidence that the "Dyno Test" (Transient Loaded-Mode Test in 310-CMR-60.02-speak) is optional nor have I found anything which supports the in-the-bay-we-lose-our-license spiel. Any MAers out there with some pointers to the rest of the story?
But, suffice to say: the MA inspection station I go to does the static idle test on the 928s. They don't give me any $h+t about working with them. Of course, in the 6+ years I've been going there's not once been the slightest issue with the health of the sharks. As above, they know that I'm going to bring them a car I already know is very-likely going to pass.
(Last time we talked about the procedure that would be invoked should they happen to notice a supercharger under the hood. )
Regardless, law or no law, I'd be suspicious of any shop that said I wasn't allowed to observe and ensure the correctness of the proceedings.

I doubt that keeping you out of the bay has to do with any smog law. Usually it has to do with insurance. When I was at the official California BAR smog referee station they had no qualms at all about letting me watch, but they had clearly defined lines that I wasn't supposed to cross "for insurance reasons".
Maybe the guy told you that because he doesn't want to lose his insurance, which would amount to the same result as losing his license...
