Here...I've made an "artist's rendition" of how mine is used. The dotted line is the strap going behind the side cover on the center console.

I use the same kind as Big Dave, it's just mine don't match very well in color, but you can't beat the price.

Andrew: You might want to tuck more of the strap up under the side cover. Mine became a lot more stable that way.

Big Dave: If you look at my door, that's mine. The one on the console is my emergency one or for the passenger. I originally thought that by having it hang low like that thiat it would not interfere with the passenger much, but my wife was complaining about it when we met up at Kickers . So I might try sliding it farther forward or maybe just hang it on the pass door. Decisions, decisions!

He happened to be the service manager at a nearby VW/Audi dealer, so he fixed me up with one. They come in one- or two-cup versions. Attachment is at the bottom edge of the console side panel, with two screws that go through the panel and thread into ears that slide up and behind the panel.

The part retailed for about $30 when I got it from him four or five years ago. It's a VW accessory for the Jetta and Passat cars, and is stocked by the dealers here in California anyway. I don't have the part no available, but the picture and the mid 90's Jetta application should net you the right part.

A lister mentioned that Carl Fausett (928 Motorsports) is now offering the cupholder I have. Carl and I visited some during the Sharktoberfest event a couple months ago. He took down all the part no's from my VW transplant holder, and has run them down and has them for sale.

The price when I got mine about six years ago was a little over $30. Inflation and the devaluation of the $US compared with Euro currencies has pushed the cost to more than double in these years. Still the nicest cupholder I've seen for these cars, bar none. Give Carl a call to get one.

*** No economic interest, etc. I just hate to see some of the Wal-Mart specials that folks use to dangle a Big Gulp inside the cars.

My old size 10 1/2 tennis shoes, with the heel facing back, on the pass. side floor, against the tunnel and seat rail has served me well.

I could arrange a group buy. 5-10 cup holders $30. 11+ $20.
Custom colors add $5.

I am not in it for the $ so I will pay freight.

These cupholders are very strong, don't rattle, and hold all sizes firmly.

I must be the only rennlister who just doesn't bother to ask why, and just hold my water between my legs. ( only bottled drinks are allowed in my car)

I think as with cell phones, there should be a hands free way of drinking fluids while drivng and keeping both hands on the wheel without worrying about spilling. Heck, this car was invented as an alternative to airline travel...where's the Freekin' drink cart!?!?!?

This is what I will throw out to the inventive world....

Build a 1 litre unit that will include the following mini components among other things:
heater/chiller and pump.

The unit can be located anywhere inside the passenger compartment. It can be hard wired into a 12v source or use a cig outlet adapter. One would pour their refreshment of choice into the container and then tighten the air tight lid. There would be a check valve allowing air to enter the unit but not to escape as the liquid is replaced by cabine pressure. There is a small dial on the unit allowing one to dial in the preferred temperature that they wish, hot or cold. Located in the bottom of this unit is a gravity fed pump. Attached to the outlet of this pump is a flexible tube that can be routed to the driver. (location and routing of the tube would have to be figured out) Within or around this tube is LV wiring which is insulated (can be incorporated into the tubing wall itself). This wiring is attached to a pressure sensitive mouth piece which when activated by slightly pressing your lips together, completes the circuit to the relay allowing the pump to be activated. The mouth piece can be held in position with some type of clip on harness that is non evassive and made of soft parts plus having breakaway clips in case of an accident. (Lord knows you don't want the air bag to slam the mouth piece down your throat!) YOu can even get the option of the dash control unit. It is interfaced with the on board computer allowing you to get a digital read out of the actual temperature of your drink. You can set/overide the thermo sensor in the unit to dial it in hotter or colder just by pulling on the selector arm of the dash computer. Simple huh?!?

So now you are focused! You have your left hand on the wheel, right hand on the gear selector, feet on the corresponding pedals and your beverage of choice millimeter's from your lips. You dump the clutch, you shave hard rubber from the tires to get to the soft sticky part, your eyes are straight ahead, you feel the inertia as the machine begins to take hold at break neck speed....wouldn't this be a great time to just kick back with your favorite beverage and enjoy life?

Are YA FEELIN IT !?!?!?!

Or do like the NASCAR guys do, with a drinking/sipping tube running up to the helmet...

I'm happy with the cupholder, frankly. Another electrical failure point isn't what I need in thecar, especially knowing that the failure mode includes a face full of a Randy V. strawberry milkshake (vodka, strawberry jam, milk of magnesia) when the switch gets gummed up.

On second thouight, we should be working on a way to put the multi-tap dispenser in the car, with the bottle concealed tastefully under the luggage cape in the rear. Bundle of hoses route through the rear air box, with a flex head mounted where the cassette storage is on the console. Maybe a high-tech voice-activated computerized drink mixer would interface so, without taking your hands off the road, you could order your martini. Leave the glass on the tunnel, accelerate hard, and it's shaken not stirred. It will need it's own separate battery, though.

I LIKE where you're going with this!

My idea now feels just a bit on the analog side compared to yours.

My solution

When travelling with the cat we must cart along
her gear. I made a platform to fit over the folded
rear seats. On the platform, along with her litter
box, water dish and food bowl (right to left in pic)

I included an extra 3" hole for my red cup; easily
reached by the driver.
