Colin that is how I felt .... but you live here a while and life changes. Drive through food is the norm. Long hurried trips with meals along the road to save time are also the norm. So, I tend to carry food in my car often these days, and coffee also. Not usually to eat or drink while driving, but more often to carry food and drink home or to a more suitable spot for consumption. With a child, this is absolutely necessary.

Colin, Porsches here are a very different thing from there. They are daily drivers, kid haulers, soccer mom cars, grocery haulers, etc etc etc ....

I use the same solution that Rog100 has. Really cheap at the autozone and works really well. Honestly, good here in the US never used this sh on the Autobahn in Germany. Just useless like extra weight get hydrated BEFORE you drive the cr out of the car. $70k sports car and no cup holder? --> Well designed my fellow Porsche engineers!

Yep H, got my first spill the lastnight bringing some dinner home...good ol big gulp cup falls over and craps all over my nicely maintained carpet...that sucked.

What is so sick about wanting someplace to put a drink(s) that you are driving home to the family for dinner? Seems like a sick idea trying to navigate the road with one cup in yer crotch and the other in hand while you manipulate the shifter.

I didn't know McD was so different in the US... Here they have tables and chairs - you do not *HAVE* to bring either drinks, burgers or sundae in the car. Plus, by skipping the drive through, there's actually a decent chance you'll get what you ordered.

Seriously guys, nobody is so busy they don't have time to sit down properly while they eat, and a car is no more a diner than it is a phone booth. Bad habbit, that's all there is to it. Cudos to Porsche for at least trying to rid the world of it.

My $0.02

Niels I am not trying to drink or eat in the car, I am simply trying to get it home so that I can sit down and eat it. No place to stand a cup is real pain even if the cupholder is in the rear of the car...I don't care personally I just don't want cups of anything that i am transporting spilling in my vehicle.

I'm with 00; Sunday I covered 800 miles, and while I donn't eat or drink in the car, I do pull off to get food and transport until my next rest stop (along I-65, there aren't restaurants and shops at the rest stop, like other interstates). I've never been as ticked as when I had a shake tip over and spill all over my 944's new floor mats.

The Germans do seem to hate them though; I think the crappy cupholders they design for Porsches and BMWs is on purpose, to pretend to cave in to demand while still discouraging their use.

Knight, I like that one. Actually, in the rear console may be better, because that is away from the driver but that looks nice, what is it? Btw for people not living in countries where it can take 4 days of solid driving from one to the other corner, or where a daily commute is usually 25 miles in traffic ...... come visit, Buds

He he... Right right... You all got your reasons

Not trying to tick anyone off here - it's just one of those little big differences between the US and Europe that is at the same time, charming, stupid, usefull, useless and, in particular, relentless in its ability to attract attention.

The only place we get those stupid paper cups are american burger chains (and european McD wannabes) - everywhere else we get drinks to-go in bottles with a cork that doesn't come off in high-G turns (I guess they know ). If you eat at the restaurant, you get a real cup or a real glass (and don't try to bring that with you when you leave ).

Anyway, to each his own, and it's probably good that there are still differences (otherwise, what'd be the point of travelling ). I just think it's amusing to see one large group of people ranting about the same thing that another large (and otherwise similar minded) group of people find completely pointless.

And don't you dare bring no paper cup into my car, d'nabbit

Emanuel, you're right about crappy cup holders in BMWs... My 528 has two in the front that are so low against the console that even the smallest cup would tip over on the first bump in the road. In the rear, a 3rd passenger can't help but kick them open and subsequently breaks them off. (They were broken on 4 out of 5 used cars we looked at).

And what's the deal with those dents on the inside of the glove compartment? Anyone ever dared to place any container of liquids on one of those while driving?

Ok, I need to get back to work. This is clearly not good for me

My Volvo's cupholder seems to have been really well designed.... to hold empty cups!

Vasser bottles are used in my Porsche. Gotta stay hydrated.

A few years ago, I noticed the cupholder in a friend's VW Jetta TDI wagon would be an ideal fit for the 928. He happened to be the service manager at a nearby VW/Audi dealer, so he fixed me up with one. They come in one- or two-cup versions. Attachment is at the bottom edge of the console side panel, with two screws that go through the panel and thread into ears that slide up and behind the panel.

The part retailed for about $30 when I got it from him four or five years ago. It's a VW accessory for the Jetta and Passat cars, and is stocked by the dealers here in California anyway. I don't have the part no available, but the picture and the mid 90's Jetta application should net you the right part.

[QUOTE=Big Dave]I just use one of these. I slipped the strap between the center console and the passenger side cover on the center console. Works well for me. Cost a whopping $1.

Dave - could you post a picture of this when it's in your 928? The picture you posted looked like it was hanging from the window.

I have one of the above, but two things I don't like about it:
1)..Challenging to get into the tight space between the pass. seat and center console without worry of scaring either.
2)..The passenger (assuming you have one) doesn't have much leg room on the left side.

I also purchased one of these ( http://paisley-group.com/store/product.cfm?detail=35 ), but I haven't yet decided where to put it without marring something or cluttering the interior.

At the moment, I'm not using any cup holder but it's risky and challenging to drive while transporting a drink (whether I'm drinking it or not). Still looking for a better alternative to my current options... (?)

I would if I could, but my camera still isn't working.
