Aircraft Engine/ Am I a Rennist Snob?

Says it has a rare aircraft engine? I want to tell the guy: "First of all the vin says it is an '84, not '85. Funny how that aircraft engine fits in under the original manifold with no adaptors, etc, looks just the same as the standard engine, really great job you did of fabrications there." But I didn't. So I have a little knowledge about these cars and now I'm the snob. Forgive me, but this is one I haven't seen before.

maybe he thinks it is a Saab and is referring to thier aircraft division. Who knows what this guy is thinking. Maybe that is what the person that sold him the car told him.

There is a Porsche aircraft engine, it is a 911 flat-six aircooled engine. He would have had my interest had he said it had the rare marine engine.

The flat 6 was a somewhat modified 911 engine biggest difference it used gears instead of chains to drive the camshafts. I also recall that it used a reduction gear so the engine could turn at 911 RPM and keep the prop at "normal" speeds. As relatively short stroke big bore engine it needed RPM to make horsepower. Little magic there.

Yee Hah!
Remember, Dr Ing Porsche WAS a southerner. South Germany, South USA, South America, what ever.

The right headlight looks wierd. Anyway, I emailed the guy and asked him for an address to come to to look at. Paducah is only about 1-1/2 hours drive from me. There is a bar-b-que place and a meat-and-three there that are both to die for, so all will not be lost.
Anyone else up for a road trip?
Cheers,
Dave

IMO, a Merlin V-12 in a hydroplane doesn't make it a marine engine.
