Yes, that would hybridize it as an idiot-gauge: unfortunately, real world experience demonstrates that to be true

Although it is indeed one sensor that controls both the idiot light and the temp. guage, there are two separate wires on the sender. Check to make sure that one of them is not loose/disconnected. The sender should still be there, even with the blower. If that doesn't fix it, try a new sender.
