Default Power mirror controls

I have intermittant control of my power mirrors - sometimes they work in X axis, sometimes Y axis, both, or not at all. As the problem affects both mirrors i'm assuming its a problem with the control joystick contacts?

Is this a serviceable item?

The first thing I would try is to pop the switch housing out of the arm rest and clean the contacts there. IIRC there are three wires, green, blue, and black. In any case clean the contacts and make sure the connections are tight.

Poor connections there can cause those symptoms and it is really easy to do.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what might be the culprit if only the driver's side is intermittent?

Let's muddy the water a bit. I have the same problem, replaced the "joy stick" and cleaned the contacts. I still have the problem.

Dave,

I'd still look at the same thing to start, partly because it's easy. If that doesn't work wait until Anthony figures out what the problem is and do what he does :-)

Bert,

I replaced the joystick housing (control, switch, whatever you want to call it) and it worked like a charm. I had the same symptoms as you did to start.

I have intermittent control of the passenger side mirror and full control of the drivers side one. I can hear some "clicking in the Y axis control motion when switched to the passenger side.

Ideas?

Does the switch housing come out as a complete unit?

Yes, Joysick & L/R switch together - justs lifts out - pry gently along edgeswith smooth flat blade & wiggle - the mushroom cap just pulls off the joystick - this may help get a better grip.

My passenger mirror is inoperable, recently my drivers side decided to act up too. I had heard that it can be a common problem to have the passenger side go out, just havent had time to explore why mine didnt work. I plan to try the suggestions of cleaning the contacts first, if I could only be so lucky! If that doesnt work & I decide to replace the joystick & switch, how much $$ & who has it readily available, the big three??

Bert,

As Alan said, it comes off as one unit. Just pry it up (not something sharp!)
Once you do it the toggle switch (left and right) will pop out of that housing. Should have 2 wires going to it from underneath. I'd replace that switch or clean it up. Then the joystick assembly is seperate as well. The mushroom cap comes straight off. Underneath there is an area with 4 arrows.
Mine was pretty much worn off so I replaced it. You need to unscrew that round piece with the arrows on it to get that joystick control off the square piece you initially pryed out. There should be 3 or 4 wires (can't remember on my 79) coming off the back. Make sure you rember where they go.
They are location specific. Pull them off. So essencially you have 3 pieces there. Square trim piece, joystick control, and left and rt. toggle control. Clean up the contacts first and see if it works. I had to replace mine.

Good luck!!

Mel,

Mine was clicking and inop on the pass side as well before I replaced the switches. Before I did it, I figgured that I would replace the switches first before diving into the motor. I was thinking there is no way the motor is buned out because in 8 years of ownership, I probably adjusted that mirror maybe 5 times!!!!

Default Mirror Control

My 89 did the same thing; it’s the mirror control computer, costs about $225. (five year old, or longer, price ) If one side works and the other doesn't it can't be the joy stick (could be the rocker swi.). If it moves in one axis but not the other it isn't likly to be the joy stick either.

Try cleaning the switches because the cost is almost nothing. I don't know if you can re-solder the connections in the control computer. I never took the old one apart.

if someone has a pic of the wiring and what goes where on an early euro I'd appreciate if you'd post or send it to me so I can finally hook mine up without getting a migraine trying to decipher a wiring diagram

Where can you find the mirror control computer in a 90GT?
I changed the joystick with no improvement.
On my car driverside adjust down but not back up again...

/Peter
