finally, an alternative to 7 series bimmers!! nice as 7's are, something w/a bit more zing only porsche could add might be a nice niche... the price is right too... imagine a 550hp twin turbo lurking under that hood!! yeeha! and in 20 yrs, I might be able to afford an early model too ("just like the 928")

for a truer 928 feel, addicts can just weld the rear doors shut and make lots of room for sub woofers/ nos bottles /928 memorabilia/ remove the cup holders, etc...

but seriously, a true 928 successor? hmmm... well it does have 1) V8 front engine, 2) a shiney porsche crest, 3) 4 wheels, 4) bigger than a 996/911, so I guess to someone standing on the moon it might appear similar, given it's "history" of morphing from a pacer...

of course, if parts cost an arm & leg, only enthusiasts know how to work on it, they develop lots of challenging symptoms from a maze of wiring and vacume systems, only 3 or 4 vendors in the world stock parts for it, we have to develop our own HP stuff, and nobody recognizes it/knows what it is - I'd feel comfortable and happily park it next to my shark...

The side windows do kind of have an overall look similar to a 911's actually. Mostly it does look like a squashed Cayenne, but as ugly as the Cayenne is(cept for the headlights/front end), I think it looks ok, pretty neat even. I'd drive one if I could afford it, just knowing it came from Stuttgart. Sure seem to be alot of cars cloning off the 911s successful look like the Audi TT & Nissan 350Z that Porsche taking from their own successful look, even if its from the SUV, that they should be allowed that discretion. I agree that marketing may be the key.

Shouldnt be called the 928's successor though for alot more reasons than it should be, especially for the 928's sake!! Even if it does have a V-8 & 4 doors... Too long of a time frame between production for one thing & doesnt resemble much of anything like a 928 other than the logo on the hood.

The line in the article about "who would help them build it"? Why does Porsche need anyone to help them, its not like they're incapable of designing and building a car all by their lonesome (we drive proof of that!).

The talk of cross using it as a Phaeton replacement? Hah! Bernd Pischetsrieder said if he had come in early enough he'd have killed the Phaeton, and says its replacement will definitely not be the same kind of vehicle.

I'm kinda intrigued by a Bentley/Porsche cross fertilization, however (as rediculous as it sounds). Maybe we'd get a modern interpretation of a 4-1/2 Liter Blower.

It does indeed look like a Porsche. In fact, IMHO, it looks TOO much like a Porsche.

It's getting to the point that every single Porsche car, viewed from the front, looks alike.

Course that's the case with every German maker these days.

I preferred the '80's, when 911's looked like 911's, 944's looked like 944's, and 928's looked like God Himself came down and designed a car.

I want to know when they are going to admit they made a mistake? It's time to start producing updated 928's again. lighten them by 3 - 400 lbs and offer an SC/TC model.

They will most likely see how the market takes it. Then possibly down the road offer a two door sport model, provided the 911 purists will allow another model the top speed spot in the line-up.

I have a feeling that Porsche knows what they are doing...and as much as we think "we" know, I suspect we don't have a clue.

I think this car will sell...and very well at that! We all talked about what a dog the Cayenne was and as far as I can see, they are all over the place out here in southern Cali. You are almost guaranteed to see one everytime you go out for a drive.

As for the answer to the 928...I think the 996 platform was it. A total redesign of the "aging" 911 platform. Having learned their lesson with the 928 (good and bad), I gather they thought, "What if we took a 911 and a 928 and bred them?" I think the 996/997 IS the answer.

So then why produce a "new" 928? There already IS one...but not a front engine edition. May as well hit the sedan market since they don't make one and that IS a big market. What better car then to have a front engine type allowing room for a 4 door with full seating. Now they can take all of those things they couldn't put into the 996/997 and adhere them to a so called "GT" sedan.

I think Porsche is about to introduce one bithcin car!

Just look at your avitar. now, thats a PORSCHE!! flowing lines, wide body, truely looks like the alternative to air travel. the 928 successor will have a wide stance, aero looks, and a shape that is a work of art. (like the 928 was!)
