Default Differential - option codes

Hello-

Can anyone please help me qualify the difference between the option codes for my '87 (5sp):

- 219 - differential,
- 220 - locking differential, and
- 221 - Porsche-locking differential?

I have done some searching while and am just trying to understand the difference between the 220 (which I have on my code list) and 221.

Thanks all -

Rich

220 is the mechanical 40% limited slip unit. 221 is the electronically controlled PSD unit available from about 1990.

Thanks guys, I swear I searched and came up with some strange search results.

Funny though, on the spec sheet, only shows the 220 standard on 88 and up - so this was an option available on 87?

Thx

220 was only standard in:

'88-89 early model year CS (Club sport, Europe only)
'88 SE (S4 Sport, UK only)
'89 late model year GT (both ROW and USA)

In all other models it was optional extra. Unless some obscure market(s) had it as part of standard equipment? In all major markets (USA, Germany, UK, France etc.) it was certainly option and available AFAIK for all models made between '78-89. Part itself changed atleast once in early eighties. I think '78-82 and '83-89 are different but interchangeable between those years even though 3sp automatic changed to 4sp in '83-'84 ('83 USA and '84 ROW) and 5sp manual changed from Porsche syncros ('78-84) to Borg Warner syncros ('85-95).

PSD (code 221) became standard on all cars in '90 model year. There is still unanswered question if PSD was available in '89 ROW cars as option or not.

Thanks Vilhuer-

Nice to verify that option then was elected for my car. As many times as I should have researched I never looked at the option codes until last night. Thanks again for the info.

Rich,

Here's an online Porsche Option decoder. I don't know how accurate it is, but it may be useful:

Interesting thread archaeology..

A search for other reasons came across US MY89 VIN #0061 - it lists PSD option 221 among its options (5-speed no sunroof car with 2.20 rear end - unusual in '89 when 2.64 was standard).

A further search also shows 10 ROW '89 cars with option 221.. VIN's #0061-0069 and 0071

Some '88 MY (yes '88 and possibly '89 also) manual gearbox seem to have unfinished work cylinder mounting point in casting. Also I think at least some '89 MY digital dashes has warning light possibility built in them. So there probably was possibility of using it but for some reason it wasn't available option like tyre pressure warning system was in some ROW market S4's.
