Hi,
I bled the brakes today, putting in the ATE Super Blue. I use a power bleeder.
While I was at the front wheel, I suffered some kind of brain fart and got to thinking the valve(s) (I was also laboring under the misapprehension there would be 2 valves per caliper on my 86) were hidden under the large rubber boots that face inboard (approx 3/4 " diameter), on the inside of the caliper. So I removed one.
Of course there's nothing under there but a shiny tube, the bleeder valve is actually on top of the caliper; but the boot tore, and would not stay back on. Imbecilic I.
I found another rubber cap in my mountains of workshop debris, and it fits on snuggley. But I am not sure what function it serves. Is it a simple dust cap, and will my ersatz replacement do? Or have I somehow compromised my car's function and safety?
Input welcome. If you want to tell me I'm stupid also, you may, but only if you first give me the information I seek.
cheers
Thaddeus

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR AS YOU WHEELS WILL IMMEDIATELY FALL OFF!
Ok, obviously that was a joke. It's just a dust cap if you will to make sure that when It's time to re-bleed the brakes that it's not filled with crud that would prevent you from bleeding them.
But I had you didn't I? C'mon, admit it. You were worrinf a little bit, weren't you?

I RTFM'd... the rubber cap I ruined goes over the 'Guide Pin'. I wonder if the cap I put on there is fine, or if it will somehow compromise the functioning of the floating caliper...
