I had a shop call me today with an automatic transmission problem. It turns out the torque converter is getting bounced around when put into drive (new transmission and tq converter) and makes a "clicking" noise for about 10 seconds. I'm thinking the torque tube bearings are not in the right place. Guy told me they had put new ones in the tube via a transmission shop.
So what is the distance the bearings should be placed from the end of the tube on and automatic?
FYI- It's a 79 w/ and S4 drive train (engine, tube and transmission).

John,
When Earl Gillstrom and I replaced the bearings in the torque tube of the '87 we "rescued" this winter, we placed them at 1/3 the distance from each end. Ran smoothly when we re-installed, with new bearings in the torque convertor as well.
