Default MAF new or rebuilt $$

My mechanic is helping me troubleshoot an idle problem. After we check the fuel flow, he is recommending test and maybe replace the MAF sensor. What can I expect to pay for a new Bosch MAF vs. a rebuilt Bosch MAF? Any suggestions on where to purchase?

Try John Speake @ www.JDSPorsche.com

John can recondition, and can ship you one to try out - a sort of buy or return. Best deal in town if you aren't sure - you'd only be out 2x the shipping. If its good you ship your old one back for a core credit.

From the big 3 its about $399 for reconditioned and about $499 new - Jim will probably clarify, not sure if they offer any on similar return basis. John is about $350 reconditioned after core credit... YMMV

Daniel,
Check out JDSPorsche FAQ for details.

Some symptoms - fast/uneven idle, faltering/hunting, poor power in general, but esp @ low revs, running rich/lean...

Do a search under MAF - there are a few previous posts out there

Thanks for all the info, guys. I'm still hoping it's a simpler/cheaper fuel problem, but it's good to know what the MAF sensor $ numbers are.

Ordered the sale price MAF from 928 Int'l. Hope it refines my car's behavior some and maybe makes it a little faster....

Guess I'll have to live with the leaky PS seals a little while longer... choices, choices...

Steve,
I stumbled across this offer while looking for something else - thought of you/this thread - may be a great deal for evaluating MAF issues: see bottom of page...

My '86 had those same syptoms and I changed out the MAF with a rebuilt one from 928 Intl, my car changed dramatically. Much smoother idle, easier starting and much more power.

Alan, I will check out the Jager site. HLJ, sounds like the MAF is the right thing for me to look at. Thanks to everyone for all the advice.

Thumbs up

Well I did complete my MAF swap out yesterday with a reconditioned unit from John Speake. Pretty easy - only took about 30mins including battery disconnect. Pulling the MAF out wasn't as easy as the FWM suggests - sticky rubber - but not too hard, like everything it will now be much easier the second time - hopefully never needed...

My car ran well immediately - my issues with fast idle are history especially the very fast & variable idle when hot. I also no longer have lean running issues at speed when hot (pre-ignition) so this is a big benefit. Overall the car runs more smoothly by far. Very happy with this especially for the time investment - it will have cost $350 when all done - not bad at all. I have been chasing this as its gradually got worse for about 3 years (dealer and local shop had no luck diagnosing it (admitedly it was not as bad then) - but it had got to the point where I needed it fixed urgently!

Working with John was a pleasure, good communication, quick response & shipping & excellent service - he has my recommendation!

Alan
