I agree that Vipers exhaust sounds funny...especially at idle....they are very uncomfortable and cramped inside and don't appear to have a good build quality...however when you mash the go pedal they GO....damm those things move! Traction is a serious problem even with 335 rear tires & thats a stock viper! Did I like driving one..yes..would I own one...no It would be very fun on a track!

I've driven an older one, and got a chance to run against a newer one on a track. I didn't like the car at all then, but the newer ones are pretty awesome. It wasn't impressive overall, on the track, but man did it pull hard on the straight!!

When I was still doing work for DCX at the Featherstone facility in Auburn Hills(the place where the test cars are parked), I talked to a guy who got to drive the SRT-10 mule cars a good bit. He suggested wearing fireproof pants, as the exhaust pipes would make the interior unbearably hot in 15 minutes or less and could burn legs. That was the original reason for ditching the side pipes on the early R/T-10's. They were brought back because the Viper clubs and enthusiasts begged for them (2nd hand knowledge - No guarantee of accuracy). I wonder if they solved that problem.

"Vipers on the other hand are even more rare than 928s"......
Hmmm... round here I see lots more Vettes & Vipers than 928s for sure. Vettes daily, Vipers a few times a month(my neighbor has one), & 928s once every 3-4 months. Think the new look of both is headin the wrong direction from the previous models. Both are beginning to lose their distinctive look, especially the new Vette at certain angles. Between the two I think the Viper is by far more apt to turn heads, but I'd still take my 20 yr old 928 over either once you factor in the costs versus what you get for your $$. If I thought of spending the $$ to buy either of those cars, new or used, I'd first find a comparably priced Porsche(911, 928, 986) before I'd buy either of those two GM cars.

reminded me of this recent story local paper..."An Oxnard man was killed Friday morning during a high-speed crash on the San Joaquin Hills (73) Toll Road, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Rodney Swain, 48, was the passenger in a Dodge Viper that lost control while traveling faster than 100 mph in the southbound lanes south of Newport Coast Drive, the CHP said. The car spun more than six times while crossing a 20-foot embankment and landing in northbound traffic just before 10 a.m.
The driver - Richard Groom, 49, of Cypress - suffered moderate injuries.
Groom was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the CHP said. ........."
The harsh reality of this is for the driver ,Mr Groom, his life as he knew it has pretty much ended. He stands a very good chance of being convicted of manslaughter, the family of the dead passenger can easily sue for damages his legal fees alone will be huge plus he gets to live the rest of his life knowing he killed someone. That was some "joyride".

[QUOTE=cobalt]I think you will find the new Z06 to be a superior car. I was not impressed by the performance of the new Viper. From a rolling start it was no faster than my turbo. For that much Hp and torque I would have expected it to be faster. I guess the extra weight can do that. The badges and other add ons look like they came off of a Stratus and they are to cramped for my comfort.
Hi cobalt. The fella that just purchased the car traded in his Z06. What he told me was how much more of a race machine and better car overall it felt. To each their own , I guess.

The upcoming coupe looks alot like the previous GTS in pictures - should be interesting to see it up close.

Hello Bill Coleman.
I agree with your comment.
When I first eyed the Viper in 2 dimensions , it was interesting. The more I Gawked at the beast in 3, the more I became attracted to it!
They did put some nice details into the car though. If you look under the rear bumper the factory actually put in 6 or 7 aerodynamic fences right before where the rear bumper starts. I imagine to add some directional stability at speed!
Does it actually work-I don't know, Anyone? Also the car sits lower than my 928. I couldn't get my head under there if my life depended on it! And obviously my head wasn't swollen,he beat me in a race so, it probably was actually a little smaller than usual!
Anyone know the top end of the beast. The fella told me 330kmph..hmmm...

This is why the 911 turbo will always be loved by men. What the heck does it mean though if a woman likes it? Yikes.

Both the new Viper and new Corvette look too much like Ferarris.
They are too angular.
Both the Viper and the Corvette started out life as curvacious beauties.
But they have turned into boring, flat, non-exciting vehicles.
They need to take a cue from the new Mustang, where they went
back to the original car. The new 'Vette should look more like
the 70's-80's corvette. Wild, coke-bottle shape.
And the Viper needs to look back to their original
concept car, with exposed headers, etc...
It looked wild and crazy...
Now they all look the same.
That's one thing I really like about the 928.
It does not look like everything else on the road...

Jim...every time I take the 73, I just want to jump on the throttle ; however, I always remember that even though it is a toll road, there are still CHP hanging out . I read the same story after it happened, and never take the 73 for granted. I love all these "high performance cars", they are all spectacular, and I try to attend any and all gatherings. I still find the 928 as the most rare at these gatherings

I was just at the wrecked exotics site after reading another thread and I noticed the vast majority of cars are either vettes or vipers. I have seen many major accidents around here that have killed the drivers or passengers involving these cars. Is it the driver or the car? I know of several incidents that the accidents were at speeds below 100mph and I have always heard that the vette is a capable car but gives no warning of loosing traction.
