Don't waste your money. Go to AutoZone and order one, no sh-t. They offer a great rack.

Agreed. No leaks from my autozone rack. Good warranty and best price out there. Plus, no shipping and handling costs.

Just put a Griffiths steering rack in my M3, and the top seal blew out on the first full day of use. While a credit has been assured, nothing was offered for the time and effort lost in R&R the rack.

Since Griffiths charges a premium price for their rack, and the quality (to me) is now suspect, I will go a different route in the future. Autozone is nearly $100 cheaper.

AutoZone uses a good remanufacturer for their rack. ARA I believe out of So Cal. I can't remember for sure. Just saw it in their listings.

I was under the impression that ZF in Germany offered rebuilt racks and that was the only option at about $650 a copy. Does anyone know who rebuilds Autozone racks? Price? I'll check with them but in case the store doesn't know will someone who does volunteer the information?

I believe every ZF subsidiary offers a rack rebuld service, I know the swiss one does.
the 928 rebuilt racks are listed in the ZF USA catalog - no prices

Hi Jon... Hi Steve...

This is for steve I take it... is his rack leaking???

I got a griffiths rack and am about to install it... I will let yo guys know in a week how is works....

Though they are right about autozone.... it is $100 cheaper and the core charge is $200 cheaper.... also has a limited lifetime warranty Wish I would have know and save $100

but I the people at griffiths are probably easier to deal with they are actual real people not a huge company... also they have specific instructions on how to handle the rack and remove the tierods... if you are removeing the tie rods to ship the rack back you must clamp the rack shaft in a soft jaw vice and turn them off... failing to do this ruins the pinion (i.e. holding the rack housing and turning the tierod will smash the rack against the pinion) not sure if autozone replaces the rack and pinion... but griffiths will clean polish and reuse....

If you want to use my huge 6" vise and soft jaws come on over to my place.... one day...

I did the research on the autozone rebuilt rack before I bought it. It seems they have a location very close to 928 Intl. I figured it might be the same guys that 928 intl use and gave it a shot (at a savings). My only gripe was that it was painted black, rather than leaving it bare metal.

So how much is the autozone rack, and do they have them available for the o.b.s (1980)?

Thanks

Hey Ken, The rack I put in Ron's S4 came from Autozone on Rayford Rd. The cost was $249 I think , with the lifetime warranty. It took a couple of days to order it though. My only complaint, as someone else has mentioned, is that it's painted black, and not very well either.

Thanks Jeff, I'll swing by there this weekend and see if I can order one.

Cheers,

Ken
