Lightbulb Brake Lamp Sensor/Warning

My brake lamp sensor has become constantly on - in my 89 s4, it's the one on the right hand side between engine temp and voltage meter.
As I understand it, after you have pressed the brake pedal once it should go out.
My brakes feel great and the car just passed it's MOT (yearly inspection) on Monday, so is it safe to drive and what does the sensor actually check/do???
I plan to go to a quarter mile meeting on Sunday and hope that it doesn't turn into a 2 mile with a bump at the end!!!!
Although some wanna be S2 auto owner reckons he'll kick my ***, so I'm quite prepared to do a quick quarter mile with a parachute in the boot just to shut him up!!!!

The brake lamp sensor is checking the (brake lamps). This usually means that you have a burnt brake light................ don't forget about the one in your rear hatch window like I did!
