Default What is this and why is it open??????

Found this while removing the inner fender covers to paint them and tidy things up a bit. What is this open space? It obviously is supposed to be closed since there is another hole in the cover that would line up if it were pivoted into place. Should there be fluid of some type in it????? Also, the line that is creased just below it...any ideas on it? I assume that the PO ran over something LARGE since I also found asphalt embedded in the gaps between the front A-arm and its mounting bolt that coincide with the direction of travel for said object as it passed beneath the vehicle. For the record, this is the 87' auto. Thanks in advance.

That is the place where a clutch slave cylinder would bolt to the clutch cover if your car was a 5-speed. Or, missing the slave cylinder, that's the reason your clutch no longer works.

If, I as suspect, that picture is from a AT, then you are missing a cover plate and the two 13mm bolts. I suspect that whoever did the last t-belt R&R lost your cover plate. (Because that space is where you bolt-in the flywheel lock.)

Dave is right....but don't use a flywheel lock to fill that hole or you'll have other problems

I agree with Dave. However, if you clamp a playing card in there, it will not only sound really cool it will bring back childhood memories.

And the bent tube is for the air injection into the catalytic converters. This is an emission component and should be repaired so you run nice and clean. Someone will say you can cap them off and remove the air pump for a little more power, but the environmentally friendly way would be to repair it.

First pic looks like the cover plate is there, but rotated upwards - think I can see a bolt head at top of pic? If so, loosen bolt, rotate plate down, fit new bolt at bottom.

I just noticed that! Looks to be an easy fix assuming you get another bolt for the bottom hole.

The plate is there, just needs rotating down into place and bolting. Thanks for the help guys, my heart skipped a beat when I crawled underneath and saw gear teeth and no fluid!! Oh well, still learning. Thanks again for the insight.

Be glad you didn't see gear teeth AND fluid. 'cause then you'd be learning how R&R the rear main seal

No, that is the stump machine.

Simple turn your car on and insert finger, makes good stumps each and every time.
