Need help...does anyone have this part???
I can't find it on 928 International or 928 Specialist's sites. It's the oil separator attached to the underside of the cam cover for the passenger side of the engine. I managed to put a crack in mine as I was trying to remove the nut that holds it in place. I didn't want to destroy the separator (it's cracked, but not broken in 2), so I left it alone and asked that it be masked off during powder coating.
Does anyone have one of these laying around in their garage?
Does anyone know how to get that damn nut off (it's inside the separator, and no tool in my arsenal can get on it)?
Does anyone know what these things cost new? The closest I could find was a separator from a pre-85 model going for $165!!! It's just a plastic cup on my car, so I'm hoping the version that fits my cam isn't so ridiculously expensive. I just hope mine doesn't melt during the powder coating and that it's still usable even with a crack in it.

Thanks for the info. How did you find it? There's no picture, title or description!!
Does anyone know a good way to get that stupid retaining nut off (#20 in the picture)? I already bent the locking clip back, but it still won't turn. PB Blaster ain't helping, either.
I've got to assume that since the separator is exposed to a fair amount of heat with the engine running that it won't melt during the powder process...I guess we'll see.

The 928 Spec site is great that way, now if they can only tie it into the PET so you'd get a picture & desc. If you go to search and drop in the PN, you're in business.
I guess they were tired of me saying.... HOW MUCH...you're kidding???

It isn't just Porsche parts--the Parts Division is usually the most profitable division in an autocompany on the basis of margin. Most OEMs mark up the parts 600-1000% versus their purchase price for their parts operations. Ouch!
"Pecked to death by Ducks" also comes to mind.

You can get the nut off. Use a long screw driver to pry up the locking tab, and then (long) needle-nosed pliers to spin the nut. The plastic separator will deform a bit - but yours is cracked already so...

I second Worf's method. A long thin screwdriver to pry the locking ring tabs away, the a long needlenose pliers on the locknut. I even used an adjustable wrench on the pliers to loosen and it was really easy. The pliers I had did not deform the seperator, but they were very long. Reverse process to re-install.

I use a socket that I cut into a 4 post spanner that works just fine. It is a Craftsman 15/16" deep 12 point that I "massaged" with a grinder. Hasn't failed me yet........
The pic is a bit weak but you probably get the idea.

The cover is with randy for powder coating, so I'll try to make that type of socket when I get it back if he doesn't have any luck getting it off either.
Thanks for all the replies.

I had to take that off for mine as well, and what I did was to take a pair of long needlenose pliers and then stick a screwdriver, between the handle and turn the screwdriver, it broke free on mine and it was fine.

I cracked mine when I was wrestling with it. I figured if it broke apart in the cam area, it might be a bad deal, so I ordered new. One vendor could get it in a week, the other could get it but couldn't give a delivery date.
