Red face "Oh, that's right, no Airbag..."

'Honey bunny' has been saying jokingly about the new '80:

"I like this one (w/o spoilers)...when are you going to have it ready."

Yesterday, I fixed the seats so you can at least sit in them.

Last night, I'm all excited to show her that she can see over the pod now, with the power seats in this car.

"The hood sure is long."

This morning, it's:

"There's no airbag...I'm not going to drive it."
"I value my life...maybe as a Sunday driver."

I'm dumbfounded.

What can I say to that? I know it's a tank, but it's true, there's no airbag (like in her '95 SAAB).

Do I have to get a new girlfriend?

U can always install an airbag wheel from a later year 928 and call it a night! I don't think she'll know that the airbag isn't connected to anything!

Get another girlfriend, or explain that airbags are somewhat more of a detriment then a good thing. Show her the stats for women and small men who get h it by them and die when they would have survived with a simple seat belt.

Show a picture of mspiegle's car from when it hit the tree. My wife was amazed that they walked away from that, and how well the car protected them.

show her pics of what happens to a human face when an airbag deploys..
I know a woman local who just recently had an accident.. minor fender bender
broken nose and 2 black eyes..

and then let her read the 2004 accident list that shows all the drivers walking away from their sharks in one piece..

Peter Wheeler, former owner of TVR refused to put airbags in his cars saying that in a rollover, an airbag deployment would shove the heads up into the car's integrated roll cage or worse, above the roll bar in a convertibe. Of course, TVR has very very small production so it can get away with that under British laws. But now that its new owner wants to expand into other markets (like the US finally!) that may not be a good enough argument.

I could put an airbag wheel there...she did ask if they could be retrofitted. But I could never lie to my best girl.

Brendan's small people and airbags point seemed to have helped. (Thanks Brendan. ) This whole ruckuss came about, apparently, when she adjusted the seat and the pod, and recalled that the TVnewshead said not to sit too close to the airbag.

I also tried to play up the suggestion that it's not all about airbags; handling, braking and strength are a factor too.

'A Hyundai with 8 airbags might do OK on the first collision, but a multi-car or a low speed hit is going to be a bummer.' (Sound good?)

Ken.... maybe tell her about the sodium azide, a fine poison,
in the bag gas generator (that was a plot element in
JA Jance's mystery novel, "Partner in Crime").

G'luck.

Put in a 5 point racing harness....then she will BE SAFE just not able to tune the radio ! Airbags are a cruel joke played on the buying public now being repeated with tire pressure monitors. The auto industry estimates it will cost $50-$75 to have tire pressure but they will be selling the REQUIRED system for about TWICE that cost ! The 928 is a very safe car first that it can avoid collisions ,brakes well, second they are somewhat heavy and mass counts. Third they are extremely strong in the passenger area. Most peoples perception of what is "safe" has no basis in reality. (like driving an SUV) . Besides life with no risks is not worth living The world we live in is actually extremely safe so much so that people dream up things to worry about.

Ken;

Tell her that when an airbag deploys she stands a good chance of rupturing those breast implants you've always wanted...

I wonder what people did in the old days, before the lawyers ruled the world??

A few years ago I "upgraded" my fleet because I wanted cars with airbags. It's important to me. But it's equally important to understand what airbags can do, what their limitations are, and how to avoid getting hurt by one when it comes flying towards you at up to 200mph (passenger side).

Do you think maybe the car is so big that she can't figure out where the front fenders are? That would intimidate a lot of people. So then ''it's the airbag'' but the reality is that the car is scary. We all know they ''shrink'' after a few drives. Go about your business and buy her a Subaru or a Saab. Most of the women in this area seem to prefer Forresters.
