Rookie Needs Help
Hello, Everyone!
I first would like to say, im very exited to be a new member and owner. I just achieved a life long dream of owning a 928 (a 79 5speed to be exact). She's in a bid of disrepair but with my sweat and blood (and money) I will have her prancing down the highway in all her glory soon enough. On to bussines I need some help on a few issues with the old girl. first things first: none of the instruments on the dash pod work! exept for the blinker signal, is this a relay? a connection? I've changed all of the fuses to no avail. Second, and staing on the electrical my brights work but no fog lights or low beams, I changed out the head light bulbs but again no luck! Please help.
May my prairs be answered by the 928 gods.

Read the FAQ at the top of the list first. PaY attention to anything that has the word fuse or ground in it. Welcome!

Welcome DO and congrats on your new shark. You might want to do a thread search on all your issues, might find what you're looking for. If you do not have Pirtle site bookmarked you might want to do it now. Great site for all your woes. http://members.rennlist.com/pirtle/ and Gregs site www.nichols.nu/tips/htm

Almost certainly a group return line fault. Welcome to the world of 928 electrical gremlins. Investigate http://members.rennlist.com/pirtle/ this and go to links for the Nichol's site as well. If you don't have the work shop manuals, you will need them, either on CD or print. They contain all the wiring diagrams, including a ground point connection diagram.
How's the skiing this year? I went in early Dec and it was excellent. Couldn't get away after that...

Welcome to the fold - and the joys of 928 electrics! It's likely to be simple - just tricky to find. Top tips on the threads include cleaning all the ground points and replacing (or cleaning) all the fuse connections in the board in the passenger footwell (a la Wally Plumley annual maintenance). I had repeated pod and various other electrical glitches until I went through everything and have had nothing since (shouldn't have said that!!), Failing that pod removal and contact cleaning isn't that tricky - see nicholls for a guide.
Good luck

I second the "read new member" thread, lots of info in it. IIRC in there you will find Wally's list of electrical to do, there are several gound points you wouldn't expect. Good luck.

The gods must be happy
Thank you all again for your help!
becoming a member was probably the best thing ive done since buying the Shark! The Pirtle site is truly amaizing and should shut me up for a while. To docmirror the snow has been great, but im glad its over. Well, maybe over?! Also, thanks for the tips on the shop manuals, I hadnt though about getting them but after further further review it would be dumb to go on any further without them.
thanks again

Write to <jim928@ptd.net> about the manuals.
I think you'll also find cd's on eBay but, if they're as good, they're procbably ripping him off.
He was on vacation a couple of weeks ago, but he might be back by now. His is a service, not a business.

Jim is back from vac.
DO, I had the same exact problem with the lights on my Euro before I sold it. Only my fogs came on with the high beams as all Euros did. My low beams were out. I changed the light switch, relay, column (triple) switch, Headlight motor, all to no avail. You say your instrument panel is out, I would venture to say your printed circuit board is most likely the culprit. I would pull the pod and look at the back of the instruments at the board.
After that then work the light problem. One thing at a time so you don't get overwhelmed. Start with a light switch ( cheap ), then a relay ( not cheap ), then the column switch etc. etc. The electrical system is the single most biggest headache on these cars. HTH

DO, My apologies for such a short answer this morning. I was between patients/procedures and was a little rushed for time. It was the quickest way I could think of at the time to head you in the right direction. BTW, it's OUR thread, not mine. All members and users, are heartily encouraged to add to it at anytime. The archives will have a thread (or several) on just about any 928 topic.
Again, Welcome Aboard........
