supercharge or turbo charge
I have been reading on the threads the past while about turbocharging and supercharging. My car is an 80 auto with the lower 9:1 CR. I still have a little work to do to get it perfect but I was wondering with this year of car, what would suit it better a turbo or a superchrage and why? What is the max HP this engine and tranny can take before I have to add a different fuel pump and injectors? I want to make sure before I dump the money into either unit that I get the one that is best for my year of 928. Thanks

Right now I think you have two choices, Centrifugal supercharged (928 motorsports) and Turbocharged via John Kuhn. How fast do you want to go? $$$$$$

Turbocharging the 928 motor is not a simple option, and we
still do not have any miles on turbo'd motors to prove the exhaust valves don't warp into pretzels under the heat.
Supercharged 928 motors keep clicking off the highway miles day after day...
Where is the discussion?

The simple reason that there are lots of supercharged 928's out there drops the "development" cost way down, there are a few early turbo 928's....but only 2-3. S/C's are much more cost efficent, unless you have really really deep pockets and want to custom design a turbo setup!

what kinda numbers can I get with the various stages of superchargers? Lets say my car puts out factory numbers ( I know it will be less but we will use this for an example). Is it possible to get her up to 400 rwhp?

In my experience supercharging both 16v and 32v motors, you should expect 13 to 15 HP per pound of boost oif it is a good kit on a stock motor, fueled correctly.
A kit that produces 5 pounds of boost should produce 65 to 75 HP non-intercooled.
An 8-pound SC kit should produce 104 HP on a 16v motor, and 120 HP on a 32v motor. Non-intercooled.
Intercooling adds another 20 HP (generally speaking) or more, depending on the quality of the intercooler system and whether it is a 32v motor or a 16v motor.
The 32v motors can handle quite a bit more boost than the 16v motors because of the superior combustion chamber design that they have, but then again, many of the 16v motors have all the low compression ratios (8.5:1 and 9.0:1) that are better suited for boosting...

so the most I can get my car up to would be around the 300 rwhp without the intercooler?? That is an ok number I guess.....I thought it would be a little higher though. How much more is it to get an intercooler added on?? I guess all this stuff is on your website, I will check it out. Anything else I should be aware of before venturing into the world of supercharging??

Carl has been known to be on the conservative side when making estimates. He is definitely not giving you pie-in-the-sky figures which should be reassuring.
BTW, 320 rwhp with an intercooler sounds pretty good to me.

...that might be a little too general of a statement - it depends on which motor you start with. If you Start with a M28/19 or M28/20 you should arrive closer to
340HP - a M28/01 or /02 motor will be at about 320 HP, give or take a few, non-intercooled.
Keep in mind that you may never have driven a 10:1 car anytime in your life before: 10 pounds per HP ( a 300 HP 3000 pound car). Many of us haven't.
Before you get out your checkbook and say "I gotta have 400 HP" - find somebody with a 10:1 car - ANY 10:1 car (it can be a 220 HP 2200 Pound rice rocket for all that it matters) and go fro a ride. I think you will be VERY pleased.
Who asked for "what they should look for before they supercharger their 928?"

and it needs updating, but it'll get you started.

Glenn - i have already updated my ires to the 17X9 rears and 17X7 fronts. The Cup rims.
Carl - That 320-340 HP non-intercooled. Would that be a stage 1 or stage 2 setup? The more I think about it, 320-400 at the wheels would be plenty. I will have to read that article now about what I need to look for before supercharging.
