Hello Helstrm,

attached some pictures of my intake. Its from a MY 94 GTS. The factory coating is about 1 mm thick !! and therefore seems to be thicker than that of some S4 intakes I have here.
After having it powder coated here in Germany we found the original coating inside brittle, but it seems not really possible to remove it in the complete intake tubes. Some spots are easy to break loose just with the fingers, some spots seem to resist everything.

As your results seems to look much nicer, do you think you can save this intake? Of course, I don not want to get any of those peaces to go into the engine.
Are you applying the powder coating to the inside of the intake our do you seal the inside with tape or something else?

Best regards

Harald

Looks really great. After you've done the powder coating, do you apply clear coat (ie. clear coat as applied on normal paint) on the entire intake / covers, or just polish it to get that wet look?

We applied high gloss clear powder after the script polishing.

Hi guys,

need some urgent advice on powder coating the GT intake.
I have mine at the powder coater who never have dealt with a 928 intake.
He told me today he has problems with oil/grease coming out from the pores when heating it to 200 deg C in their owen.
He has done this twice and still get this on the surface.
No good putting powder on it before it stops I guess.
Have you guys experienced this and what is the solution?
Living in Sweden there is limited number of powder coaters with experience on this.

Thanks in advance for advice

Cheers/Peter

He needs to degrease the part first. In fact the last step before coating is to use a degreaser/thinner. One thing that works very well is Puple power (Purple stuff) spray the intake down. Let it sit for a few minutes and pressure wash it. The he needs to wipe it down with thinner. I would not coat the inside. If he does make sure it is a thin coat on the inside that way if it starts cracking or chipping later it will not cause any damage. I know Porsche coats the inside from the factory but since that area is not exposed there is no real reason to do that.

Thanks for the quick answer !

isn't there a risk if there is still some grease/oil left that the powder coat doesn't stick properly since they bake each powder layer in the owen?
I assume he is degreasing it after he baked it and get's oil on the outside but will have to check with him.

Thanks verfy much for your help!

Cheers/Peter

Rick & Randy, that looks simply awesome! Are either of you going to the Sharks in the Mtns in June in NC?? Would love to see your work in person. Would also love for you to look at my car & hear your thoughts on my 85S.

The previous owner had the dealer(Brumos) get the intakes powder coated, but it looks could definately be better. Has noticeable pits, air bubbles, discoloration, etc. in it. None major, but the overall effect is amature in my book. No where near the incredible look of those pics you posted.

I have learned through reading here that the intakes on an S can have softer metal that requires filling after blasting, I am thinking that is the problem with mine, they weren't filled & smoothed. I know I would not have accepted them after paying good $$ looking as they do, I was suprised the owner did, much less Brumos!! Think its a case like I read someone post on here, a dealership who is all about the 911 & new line of cars, a 1985 928S just doesn't deserve their best perhaps in their eyes. I noticed the poor quality of look on my intakes the very first time the seller opened the hood! All I have done so far is just to paint the lettering in heat resistant red to liven it up a bit, but long term I want to get them redone. I had one quote of $300, but they sounded tenative, as though they werent sure of their ability to get it right maybe. You guys obviously do top quality work!
Thanks!

You don't have to fill after blasting. We don't use sand to blast and the aluminum Oxide does not damage the intake. Filler is used to fill imperfections in the casting. The intake itself does not have many imperfections. it is the cam covers that would need filler to look perfect. But even without the filler the powder should not bubble. If it did then they coater did not strip the factory coating off. The factory coating can not handle the 400 degree bake and bubles because of that. The imperfections are just pits in the metal. Without filler the cover will not be smooth all over but the powder should still coat fine. On the early 928 intake I would not bother using filler because you can't see much of the cam covers anyway. The S4 intake allows you to see the covers but I am still not sure if it is worth filling as long as the powder comes out nice. in your case I think they did a half @ss job of stripping the factory coat before powder coating. Powder should not bubble..

Thanks for all of the info, that does make perfect sense after hearing how some have difficulties in stripping the factory coating off. I still suprised that a dealer the caliber of Brumos would accept such shoddy work from whomever they sent it out to. I KNOW that would not have flown if it had been a newer 911 or one of their race or collector cars. So do either of you plan to attend the SITM since you are close by in SC?

Thanks again,
Mel
