Default Trick question for the racers

How about running the alternator from one of half shafts at the back? And what about an electric power steering pump? That could free up quite a few ponies eh?

These are longshot questions, I know, but anyone tried this on a 928?

not to sure about the alternator but for power steering you can try and lose it like some of the 911 racers do.

With that alternator approach, you still have the weight of the alternator and only transfer the work from the front of the engine to the drive output - with a less efficient drive mechanism. If you tend to believe in Newton's Laws, there's no free lunch.

You could power a steam turbine from the heat of the headers and genereate power...

When I eventually convert my power steering hoses to Aeroquip, besides adding a cooler, I was also considering adding a bypass valve to let the PS pump freewheel above a set MPH.

alternator will run too slow on the rear, and as randy says, there is no free lunch, if you need 10 amps to run the car, you need 10amps x 12 volts = 120watts. (1/8th hp) it has to come from somewhere, unless you find a battery with enough capacity, and then the weight is going to go up!
so, not a good idea.

electric powersteering pumps are used by cup cars, and anderson has one. not a lot of power to be saved there, but simplfies things . there is some energy to be saved, but there is not a lot. when the driven pump is not being pushed (ie in turns) it doesnt take much engergy to drive it. However, in some turns, that could be improved by an electric pump.
