How about doing the TT on a late model AT with the tranny in place? Anybody done it? I'll give it a try later this year.

Bill the 4 spd At drive shaft protrudes about 7 inches into the bell housing and there is a lower strap support below the driveshaft on the bellhousing which does not allow the shaft to drop down. I have however seen bellhousings where someone used a saw and cut off that lower portion of the upper bell housing. I have no idea of what that does to the structural integrity of the rear of the bellhousing only guess that it may weaken it. You would still need to push the trans back slightly because of the roll pin locators at the junction of the tube housing to the rear of the bell housing.

Jim:

Thanks for the reply. I understand that if you can get the bowden cable bracket off the top of the bellhousing, you can flip the bellhousing upside down and drop it out. No need to cut the strap. I'm wondering if you can tilt the TT down enough to remove the rear upper bolts and if the TC can be removed with the tranny in place. I'm game.

More that some things CAN be done but that does not mean they SHOULD be done. Dropping the transaxle is not really that big a job just the 225 lb weight of the auto trans is cumbersome. We get spoiled by having the lift and air tools.

I was quoted $1500 before I bought the shark. My mechanic for the Boxster is a 928 driver and said the sound and wobble was something to look for when I bought it because it was expensive repair.

Hope it works out for you!

Jim, when you rebuild the TT do you also include new rubber seals for the vibration damper (the ones attached to the damper on either side of it)? They do have an original Porsche parts number. If yes do you sell these separately? I'm in the process of rebuilding the tt on my car, but not sure how to get hold of these seals.

Jim I did it WITHOUT cutting the bellhousing, it is very tight, but it can be done

Bill
The TC housing bolts (6mm hex IIRC) were stuck/hex started to slip, so I dident get the TC out & do those bearings, fortunately they turned out to be ok.
That bowden cable bracket was an pain in *+#~ !!!, also 6mm
