Default RDK was ahead of its time

Porsche installed RDK tire pressure monitoring technology in 928s and some of their other models. I guess they were ahead of their time. I'm fine with the RDK in my GTS.

WASHINGTON - New passenger cars must have tire pressure monitoring systems in place by the 2008 model year, the government announced Thursday.

Too far ahead. They had to do way too complex system with solid sensor mounting points in wheels etc. Modern electronics allow much simpler design.

Just another example of politicians sticking their their noses where they don't belong. Now every oblivious American can have a car that turns on the headlights, locks the doors, checks tire pressure and monitors their every move as they drive.

I guess that stuff is useful when they're talking on their cell phone and watching their in-dash dvd.

I have no problem with RDK - but when I drive some of these new cars its very annoying battling the preprogrammed "safety" features. If I want the doors locked, I'll lock them. I guess I'm in the minority though.

My RDK sensor bung in the right front wheel,,,,,,has a slight leak, making the RDK light come on every few weeks. Ironic isn't it? Very complex for 1990. There were better ways even back then.

The preprogrammed safety features in many cars can be modified by unprogramming the remote, or using the dealer to set it with the ODB-II. I've heard of changes to the locking feature, honking on remote lock/unlock, lights on/off, etc. Read the operators manual, or ask the dealer on a new car. What scares me even more, is OnStar, and vehicle black box speed, braking, lateral accel, seat belt use, throttle position, and impact force. If you have a 1994 or newer GM car, it's probably in you, and they can prove it in court. Don't people read Orwell anymore?

I'm glad it was deleted in the '94...

Yes and the new rules were heavily lobbied against by all the tire makers and aftermarket wheel people for obvious reasons. The warning threshold is to be 25 % under inflated. But so few people ever check tire pressures it simply shows how you engineer things for the lowest common denominator. Even with the warning light many people will look at the tires see that there is still "enough" air and keep on driving. You simply can not protect some people from themselves. The vast majority of drivers probably do not even OWN a tire pressure gauge many do not know how to use one. Still amuses me to see cars on "emergency" inflated spares flying along the freeway at 75-80 mph especially when mounted on the drive axle the differential spider gears are working overtime due to the vastly different tire circumference......As much as you try you can not protect some people from themself.

I have two sets of wheels for my S4 with RDK sensors fitted and have had no problems with any sensors in the last 5.5 years of ownership.

Its like the cooling flap system, no problems also, however, I have undertaken routine maintenance and I have checked out their operation via WSM description.

My sensors operate perfectly too. The right front drains air slowly from the wheel, and when it reaches the low set point, it alerts me to the fact that it has partially deflated the tire. Sysiphian, if not ironic.....

It is interesting, nonetheless, to watch and admire the introduction of technology - and its progression: in this case of 'RDK', the evolution is towards less complex more reliable modes of making a sound idea functional. Recall the mechanical counter clicking away beside the passenger seats in the early 16v cars: its job was to toll the bell on the O2 sensor life - when a single one wire sensor was the latest trick. Now we have up to six 4- wire sensors ..... and one program slot on a chip could monitor all.
It is often the Administrative mindset influencing the application of our technological advances that make one stop with mouth agape in disbelief. As Doc noted, Orwellian ( and Huxleys) warnings can run more closely to the current reality than is comfortable: " The star witness against the defendant your Honour, is his black box ..."
