It looks like fun, an opportunity to stretch the ol' shark fins. I figure you boosted wierdos will be all about this sort of thing.

Tim, several of us participate every year.....George Suennen, Bill Ball, Dave Lomas, myself and others show up every season, while past participants include Don Hanson and of course Marc and Susan Thomas (who could only make it up to 210 mph....) Definitely what the 928 was made for. Any of us would be happy to help you get started, or come on up as a course volunteer...next month at Bonneville will be a 300 mph attempt by an electric vehicle.

Keep in mind that it does take some planning and careful car prep....not just "arrive and drive". If anyone wants some detailed pointers, just speak up.

Rich.

But car number 928 is taken for life by some unmentionable individual that beat me to it, dammit. How are you doing Rich?

There are a couple of boosted cars running this year too. It should be another fun year (if I can get my car back together in time). If my car isn't ready I may educate some other 928ers and navigate for them. The 928 contingent is strong and respected by the other competitors. We would like to try for an all 928 team under the overall Porsche entries. In team competition you can have 10 cars per team and the Porsche team usually has 20% as many as the Vette' teams but still competes strongly for 1st place.

The pic in my avatar is me running the Bonneville 100 solo and getting a 1st place by being approx. half a second (.515) off perfect after averaging 125mph for 101.6 miles. Believe me, way too much fun! Paul Mooridian (sp?) and Thomas Moore also compete as well as Pete Whelan from South Dakota. Todd Carpenter has decided to no longer run the SS class in his 220mph Camero (I believe, not positive) and may go back to a 928. I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting and I know several that have yet to compete but are very interested.

Anything you may want to know or may need, just ask. I'm sure you'd be welcomed with open toolboxes and coolers.

Too much fun indeed! I was thinking of initially entering my stock Euro S and driving in the novice classes (of course). Later, if time allows and the planets align, my '81 will be bakc together and I can run that.

How does classing work? I know it's timing and accuracy rather than all out speed, but how is it scored?

Tim, as a rookie you can run up to the 125 mph class, which will allow you a maximum speed of 140 mph. For any class above 115 (max speed allowed is also 140)you will need a 5 point harness and fire extinguisher added to car. Classes up to 110 mph (max speed allowed is 124mph) require stock seat belts and fire extinguisher. Of course, helmet is required along with gloves, cotton clothing (higher classes require race suit), and leather shoes (or race shoes).

GPS is allowed, most people use it. Of course, some of us known as "handtimers" can do just as well without girlie GPS ....heck, I didn't even have a functioning speedometer for my first event and placed first with a 125.016 mph average.

Another great way to get involved is to navigate. I did this with George my first time, helping him at Bonneville in the 140 mph class, with top speeds of 165 mph. This was an awesome learning experience and helped me immensly.

Dave is correct...some jerk bought the lifetime rights to car number 928

Tim:

Here's a summary page I put together.
ORR Info

I'll be at Bonneville and Gambler's Run this year. I did 140 average and 165 max non-boosted, no problem. The 928 was designed with this kind of driving in mind.

See you there!
