Hi,

Anyone know if my '88 UK S4 should have any sort of cover or grommet over the hole for the towing eye in the rear bumper?

Cheers! You wouldn't happen to know if its the same size hole as on a S4? Just curious......

I think the hole is the same but the GTS has provisions for a screw which holds the cover in place

Was wondering about that, my 91 had one but my 87 did not, always thought it was missing but looks like I was wrong ! Cool.

Watch out for the front metal plugs getting corroded in place so they cant be removed! The screw out hex tool will break off sometimes - cast metal, not a real allen key. Later plugs are rubber, look like a large baby dummy/pacifier. We had one plug that had to be drilled out, and I got a tap made at work to clean up the threads - 20mm od but 8 threads/inch...owner actually had to get a tow only a month or so later.

Where is it located on the front? Is it MY specific, because I can't seem to find it on my 86.5. Anyone have pictures illustrating this location?

THat's not a tow loop hole. It's a laser detector rear sensor wire entrypoint

nee, look for a nickel-sized round manhole cover on the passenger side in the bumper cover. Next to the grille.

Careful , around 86 the front hole moved from under a plug in the cover to just inside the air intake mouth, not exactly sure when. May be related to the change in size of the threaded part from 15mm to 20mm.

Yes my early '86's is there, Bil lBall and I used it ... it should be there, perhaps filled with mud??

I know an 86 where the hole is NOT under that plug, but it is in my 83...go right into edge of the air intake nearest and check. If it has the metal plug fitted, you should be able to find a ~6mm hex hole for an allen key (should be in tool kit) to unscrew it. If plug not fitted, should be a hole ~18mm that you can stick you finger into. The later plugs went to black rubber thing (like a large pacifier/dummy) with ring to pull it out . If the plug is difficult to move, DONT break the supplied crap metal key off in the hole! The plug is alloy and can be reasonably easily drilled out, except that it difficult to avoid damaging the bumper cover with a std length drill, and long drills that big are not cheap. I think best would be to drill right through it with a long drill of 6mm- 1/4", then try an easy out, or maybe a left hand drill. For thread cleaning, the early size is 15mmx 8tpi, which is very close to an ACME thread size, but for the later 20mm x 8tpi, you are on your own - I had one made by our toolmakers at work.

Your car is probably similar to my S Africa spec 89 RHD one. On mine the rear tow point is situated centrally above the number plate. The front towpoint is inside the top left of the air intake (as seen from the front). Both are 20mm and were empty when I bought the car but 928 International supplied the rubber plugs JP mentioned though I don't know if the rubber plug is correct for the 89 MY.
